Outsider Blackbear Windclan wants to share the secret of immortality with his own people, but can he, and the City of Elysium, survive the corruption and decadence that immortality has bred into the ageless society?
And what of the consciousness of self-aware nano-sentient servitors and their quest for vengeance?
"An enormously impressive achievement...A marvelous array of cultures presented in astonishing depth"—Kirkus Review
"A thoughtful, well-crafted novel"—Publishers Weekly
"Masterful story"—Library Journal

August's selection from Phoenix Pick, so I'm passing the word on:
MarkOur free ebook for August is L. Neil Smith's Prometheus Award Winning novel, Pallas. Pallas is the first book in the Ngu Family Saga.
The coupon code for August is 9991494 and will be good from now through August 31, 2012. Links for downloading the book will be available from our online catalogue, http://www.PPickings.com .
We are also offering the second book in the series (Ceres, a Prometheus Award finalist itself) for only $3.99 through the download site. The regular ebook price of the novel is $9.99.
Brief Description of Pallas:
Ex-U.S.-Senator Gibson Altman rules the prison colony where everyone is expected to live by rules that govern every aspect of their lives.
The inhabitants of the experimental colony survive in a society plagued by crime, corruption and despair, toiling endlessly at tasks they are appointed to. Altman lives a life of luxury, ruling the lives of the souls
trapped within his experiment and brooking no opposition to mandate.
However, Pallas, the terraformed asteroid, is also home to Curringer, a society in stark contrast to Altman's prison. It is a community where individual freedoms are championed and men and women are free to live as they please.
Emerson Ngu escapes from Altman's prison colony and becomes a hero of Curringer. Altman is driven by a deep hatred of Emerson and his triumph and will do anything to get his revenge on him. But in the process will he also destroy his own daughter and even the world of Pallas?

Not exactly Science Fiction, but very related. John Campbell was the editor of Astounding and Analog, likely could claim the title of the father of modern Science Fiction (but you folks already knew that)... When I was in my teens, reading every issue, the editorials were mostly in the way, and irritated me by taking up space from more stories. They were always so serious. But now, they are very interesting, both from the thought provoking nature and their perspective on the times in which they were written.
This is a collection of some of the better ones. Collected by Harry Harrison
