The Day of The Jackal by Frederick Forsyth

The Day of the Jackal is a classic. Definitely read that.

Another good one is The English Assassin, part of the Gabriel Allon series of books by Daniel Silva.

I haven't read it, but Hit Man by Lawrence Block might fit what you're looking for.

And there's always James Bond, with his license to kill.

Barry Eislers Rain series is somewhat enjoyable in the assassin department.

The series by Lawrence Block is great. Keller is a great character. Andrew Vachss writes some great stuff.

Actually, he did do one that I know of! His Batman is pretty hard core. It was a novel though, I have not seen the comics. His book is called....The Dark Knight? I may be wrong.

Two books by David Morrell, Brotherhood of the Rose and Fraternity of the Stone, are good shadowy-organization assassin books. I think he's also written several others in this genre, but I can't recall them right now.

Those two books are good, I second the nomination. Morrell really tries to do right. They are good reads. Also, James Byron Huggins, his stuff is always about nasty killers, secret religious orders who kill, super assassins, and genetic monkey business.

Andrew Vachss never wrote a comic in his life

Andrew Vachss has written more than two dozen books--primarily hardboiled crime-fiction novels. He did write a Batman novel--The Ultimate Evil--and it was adapted to comics. Plus he's had numerous short stories adapted to comics, in Dark Horse's HARD LOOKS series, their CROSS series, and PREDATOR: RACE WAR. Vachss also wrote a children's book for adults, ANOTHER CHANCE TO GET IT RIGHT, which included illustrations by artists best known for their comics work. And, just last week, Dark Horse released HEART TRANSPLANT, with a story that was developed in prose and art by Vachss and Frank Caruso--but it's not a graphic novel. Don't be looking for any word balloons. Check Vachss' website for more info.

I read the first 2-3 a while ago. I liked the characters but after a while it got rather formulaic. I think the only reason I quit the series is that I read all he had in the series at the time and never went back for the new books as they came out.

Character is pretty good and the action/thriller portions are well done.
