I'm almost inclined to disallow Baen from such discussions. Their covers are easily identifiable, catch the eye, and really scream the Baen brand. Pointing out their uniqueness would be like saying the Sun lights the sky.

    *Looks outside*

Usually I'd be inclined believe you Rob, but that's not a very convincing point to make to a Brit

These look like they came strait from the 70's. Like a retro art kinda thing, but not so good.

I hate any cover with a model on. I really do. I hate models on covers. I hate real people in artwork on covers, but models mostly. It's a personal taste, I suppose, but I think adding a real face to the cover looks tacky and awful. There's something about abstract or symbolic covers that are more alluring.

But, ESPECAILLY, if that person's face is the actor from the new and upcoming film and the book is being re-printed for the fourth time with their mug stuck all over the front.

    LOL

Good point there Cheerwell-how does one use the sun analogy when one can't SEE the sun because it's always cloudy/rainy/foggy?

You know if it was just the Queen on the cover in that pose, that's okay, but the one in the background with the "antlers" just totally ruins it the whole picture....

All of the Wheel of Time covers are horrible. These are the worst of the bunch

    Is that Chuck Norris?

    Is that Chuck Norris?

I don't know; I hardly recognize him without his cowboy hat and trenchcoat.

I think Chuck was too busy bringing tangsudo to the American west with a series of dropkicks, 1 in 3 inch punches and plenty of fromage to grace the covers of Robert Jordan's series.

When Chuck Norris falls in water, Chuck Norris doesn't get wet. Water gets Chuck Norris.

A rich vein of arty badness indeed. I mean who commissions these things? I suppose it must reflect the publishers' opinions of fantasy readers, 'They're all inadequate dorks - just shove anything on the cover. I've got this cousin in special school - he likes drawing unicorns...'
I love the sulky bugger on the left of this one. And why has that woman got such a tiny head (and why are her breasts up on the front of her shoulders - that's one uncomfortable bra she's wearing)? And you just know Chuck is going to punch the hell out of that map in a minute don't you?

I like them. They're not the best covers around, but they have an air about them that lacks in so many modern covers.

Would happily take them over the lacklustre UK covers.

Really? I know they aren't great but they are design classics compared with the artistically-challenged quadriplegic Sunday painters school of the American ones.

For the uninitiated here's a British PB cover from the series:

But they're so bland and samey.

I prefer most Tor US covers to the Tor UK/Orbit covers we get, simply because they're different.
