Trying to remember a book...

I'm trying to remember a book or at least an authors name that I read when I was a teen (I'm 46 now). It was about a boy (maybe 12 years old) who started randomly & instantly shifting into a wolflike creature. I remember on part where he was sitting in church & shifted into the creature, but shifted back so fast no one was sure of what they saw.
I think the boy was adopted (go figure), but for the life of me I can't remember anything else.
I had thought the book was titled Wereling or Wolfling, but the books I found searching those titles turned up nothing. I also had thought that Clifford Simak had written it, but no luck on that front either.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

oops Not the same author though. But I would recommend this trilogy.
