Looking for a novel

I only ever read the back cover years ago and there was something about a god found dead in a temple and perhaps an ex soldier. I'm terribly sorry that I don't have much info to supply. I know it's not much to go on but if anyone can remember a book like that your input would be much appreciated

could it be Thieves World ? - this is a shared universe series where Gods can be killed, and one of the protagonists is an ex-soldier demigod called I think Tempus

Thanks algernoninc for the reply I went to the Thieves World website and had a look at the back cover blurbs of all the books, but unfortunately none of them seem to be the book I was looking for. But they do look like very interesting books that I'll have to read in the future. So thanks for putting me onto them and thanks once again for your help. It's much appreciated
