Thread: New translation of Roadside Picnic?

  1. #46
    Reviving this rather ancient thread...

It turned out that I got distracted and never posted an excerpt... but the book is now available online, and it has a "Look Inside" feature on Amazon. So if anyone's interested, here's the link:

I'm interested, but I am pretty much only reading on my Kindle so its a no-go.

Is it not available on the Kindle yet? I think it's supposed to be at some point... or is it that the preview's not visible that way?

Its not available. Quote from Amazon site:

    Tell the Publisher!
I'd like to read this book on Kindle

Darn. My publisher did say that it ought to be available eventually... I hope that happens soon!

Hi, look forward to getting a copy but is it available direct in the UK?

Last time I checked, they were negotiating to use the translation for the next batch of the current UK version: http://www.amazon.co.uk/Roadside-Pic...4769330&sr=8-1

I'm not sure how that's going, though, or how long it's going to take...

Just an update... it looks like it's definitely going to be used for the next UK reprint of Roadside Picnic. I'm still not entirely certain when that'll be out, though.

I've decided to (finally!) post some excerpts on my webpage: http://www.math.utexas.edu/users/ole...idePicnic.html

I'm also going to make a poll to see which Strugatsky book I should translate next...

OK, thanks. I'll keep an eye out for it

I regret to say I did not enjoy Roadside Picnic (original novel in English) as much as the central themes and concepts appeal to me. However the ending is something that has always stay with me. Would you please somehow message me the very last page so I can see how you translated it? I have never forgotten that final statement.

If anyone else has the book, I'd appreciate if you could send me pm.

I'd be happy to message you the last page -- how would I go about that?

Kindle Edition is on Amazon now...bought!

Excited to read this. I often dont like older "classics" that much, but the sample kind of grabbed me.

    Flawless translation.

Unfortunately, I liked the ideas a lot better than I liked the actual story, so the overall experience was rather mixed for me.

    Glad you liked the translation!

I suppose the ideas are definitely the most unique thing about "Roadside Picnic"... Out of curiosity, what didn't you like about the story?
