Always held Henning Mankell as one of my favourites. Some other Scandinavian authors translated into English worth checking out is Liza Marklund, Jo Nesbo and Gunnar Staalesen.

The Jo Nesbo "Harry Hole" books are amazing!

    And of course Stieg Larsson...

The Richard Jury books by Martha Grimes are great.
If you are looking for an unusual hero/detective, try the burglar series by Lawrence Block. The hero is a (former) burglar, who has to solve crimes he keeps getting connected with because he just can't stop stealing stuff. Light but fun reading.

I think you all must read " B is for Burglar " . This is a really good novel of Private detective Kinsey Millhone who has been created by American author Sue Grafton.

I have always enjoyed reading Mickey Spillane. His stories are cool and filled with testosterone.
