SF and Cyberspace

Hey there!

I just started a research on the topic which SF Stories/Books deal with Cyberspace, Virtual Reality, Artificial Intelligence, Augmented Reality and other technologies to network, connect and socialize over the web. Which books or films do you consider to be the top-10? I'm also looking for alternative reading beside the big authors such as William Gibson or Neal Stephenson.

Try Stanislaw Lem's The Futurological Congress for a pre-Matrix Matrix (but done with drugs, not computers).

Another really good one is Christopher Priest's The Extremes.

How about the book that started it all: Neuromancer. I actually heard someone credit this book with the entire concept of the internet. I'm not sure about that, but it certainly started Cyberpunk.

thanks so far, i had necromancer already on the map, as well as snow crash (stephenson) and Otherland (Tad Williams). A month ago a read "Der Birkenwald" of the german author Kai-Michael Böttcher, also nice one about a guy who coincidentally finds out he's living in a VR...

But it doesn't have to be so close to the topic of VR - total immersion, actually i'm looking for alternative cyberspace ideas for a future study in sociology.

Gibson admitted that he did not know anything about computers when he wrote Neuromancer.

Shockwave Rider by John Brunner and The Two Faces of Tomorrow by James P. Hogan both came out before Neuromancer and both are better as SCIENCE fiction.

Halting State by Charles Stross and The Lifecycle of Software Objects by Ted Chiang are both newer takes on augmented reality. I enjoyed them both a lot. Oh and Ready Player One by Ernest Cline takes place almost entirely in the OASIS, a virtual reality environment of the future. Hope that helps!

There have definitely been a lot of postings that i will have to put on my reading list. But let's perhaps widen the subject: What about Movies and Computergames? In general everything which deals with the ideal of simulation, VR, AR and possibly upcoming innovations in cyberspace.
