hi, need help with book title

Hi,
wonder if you helpful people can assist. I'm looking for the name of a book I read back in early 90's. The plot was a male acquired a ring and this gave him the power to have out of body experiences, he ended up being shot I believe but managed to jump out his body before he was actually killed and by using the bodies of his friends eventually tracked down his bodies killer.
Bit vague I realise but if anyone has any ideas I'd appreciated it. (if I recall anything further I'll add it to the thread)
