think kahn's right- do remember rpgs on my old amstrad cpc back in '86.
RPGs on computer evolved from rpgs around a table from the 70s or earlier- in fact, these are still a lot better than the current computer rpgs
Icewind Dale + Heart of Winter
Baldur's Gate + Tales of the Sword Coast
Planescape Torment
Neverwinter Nights
Icewind Dale 2
Baldur's Gate 2 + Throne of Bhaal

Oh I agree with the P.C. thing. But really the first RPG I can remember was console. D&D for Intelivision. I guess there were alright text based stuff for P.C. But the real evolution came about on the NES system in my opinion. Zelda, Final Fantasy, Destiny of an Emperor. Now that was cool stuff! When you really think about it, the whole D&D franchise probably wouldn't be the same without Final Fantasy 1,2, and 3!
This post upsets me as a true roleplaying fan! I am going to make another!
Sorry have to go with Morrowind and just out of interest who remembers Bards Tale?

Not so sure about that as I remember playing "Bard's Tale" on the Commodore 64 many aeons ago, on eof the oldest and first RPG's around.
I played it on the Amiga originally. Cursing like mad cus I raided that supply dump in town, then my party died off and all the stuff was gone when I started a new one. Still those were the days.
I also enjoyed both traveller and space something, both originally table top games.
"Space Crusade" perhaps?Originally posted by Caleddin

I liked that game a lot. One of the first multi-player turn based strategy games on a home computer.
Nah, not that one, but I had forgotten that classic! Moving your space Marines about, then cussing if you got into hand to hand.
The space one was set in a sort of Victorian England, and you could visit Mars and that. I played it as a tabletop first, which is annoying me even more as I can't remember the title.

Would have to say BG I. I remember playing it in the dark and just getting sucked into it.
I'm going with Baldur's Gate 1 on this. I remember it was the 1rst one I played and once I figured it out I couldn't stop. A close 2nd is BGII. On a side note, I thought Planescape was a very fun game and an interesting premise unfortunately the story was hard to follow since not too many people knew the Planescapre world and history.
