I might as well be the first to recommend Ender's Game.

I know it's as dated as hell, but every time I start, I can't stop until I finish every book. I'm talking about the Lensman series by E.E. "Doc" Smith. I know I've read it at least 10 times. I've also heard it described as "boring." To each his own.

    Here's a few:

    Dune - Frank Herbert
The Burning Heart of Night - Ivan Cat
Stranger in a Strange Land - Heinlein
Ender's Game - Orson Scott Card

Liege Killer trilogy by Christopher Hinz
Star-Rigger series (If you can find them) by John DeChancie

    I'll second Forever War!

And of course, my favorite, Hyperion by Dan Simmons! (As well as the follow up novels, Fall of Hyperion, Endymion and Rise of Endymion!)

Neuromancer by William Gibson & Burning Chrome (a collection of Gibson's short stories) are good reads.
Also finished Neal Stephenson's Snow Crash and that was good, so any of them are my recommendations.

Mindstar Rising - Peter F Hamilton (then A Quantum Murder and The Nano Flower if you like it enough)

    Altered Carbon - Richard Morgan

    I second Ender's Game too.

I will "third" it (Ironic for those who know the story )

As for what hasn't been recommended already, I will suggest
Bones of the Earth by Michael Swanwick as a recent book and UBIK by Philp K. Dick as a an older book.

Honestly, either the Night Dawn Trilogy or Mindstar Rising by Peter F. Hamilton. Or else, the New Uplift Trilogy by David Brin( the old one was boring, the New Uplift Series is awesome!! If you are like me, you will love the alien race called the g'Kek!!)

For less space opera style, go for Remnant Population by Elizabeth Moon.

    Question Re: recommend a book

I would recommend anything by Ursula K Le Guin, especially "The Left Hand od Darkness" and "The Lathe of Heaven" (which is going to be on the A&E this month}.

I second THE LEFT HAND OF DARKNESS and third THE FOREVER WAR!!

Then I recommend Kim Stanley Robinson´s MARS Trilogy. Three very long books which I found hard to put down but did sometimes just because I wanted to prolong the pleasure and excitement a little longer.

I was glad to see THE CHRYSALIDS mentioned as I just started reading it last night and was a little wary just because I´ve heard so many times that Wyndham was only really good in THE DAY OF THE TRIFFIDS. I´m really enjoying it so far . I picked it up second hand along with THE MIDWICH CUCKOOS.

    Smile Re:Reccommend me a book

Just about all of the books that folks are mentioning are very good. In fact, a lot of them are great. I have a couple of series' that I will add to the list: "The Gap Into..." series by Stephen Donaldson, and the "Darkness" series by Harry Turtledove. Strickly speaking "Darkness is fantasy, but it is very diffeent from most fantasy. Good reading!
