Have to agree with Cirias in the first post. Gotrek and Felix are a great pair and the relationship between them is a fantastic fuel for ever more exciting stories. Gotrek is a dwarf who has made a solemn oath to seek out a glorious death. Felix is a poet who agrees to chronicle the dwarf's deathwish during a heavy night of drinking. Gotrek holds the poor Felix to his agreement and the poet is compelled to follow the suicidal Gotrek on his adventures, seeking out monsters, sorcerers and mighty warriors across the Warhammer world. Unfortunately, Gotrek is rather good at killing and to Felix's continual disappointment, the dwarf destroys all that find themselves before his mighty axe.
I have to admit that one of my new favorite duos is Atticus and Oberon from the Iron Druid Chonicles. Royce and Hadrian from Riyria would be up front also. I love a duo that make me laugh and can put a lump in my throat also and those two certainly qualify. Jean and Locke from Gentlemen Bastards also fit the bill.
Will and Halt from Ranger's apprentice
Barak and Silk from the Belgariad
and definately Crowley and Aziraphale from Good Omens
First though was Tehol and Bugg from MBotF, can't read them without laughing every time![]()
I think the only pairing on my list that I haven't seen already would be:
Caine and Mael'Koth
The rest fall in line with what a lot of others have already posted.
Atticus and Oberon
Royce and Hadrian
Jen and Locke
Will and Halt
Has anyone mentioned Rincewind and Twoflower yet? Or you could throw the luggage in as the second character for either of them....
Wallie and Nanji in The Seventh Sword series by Dave Duncan
I'll second Barak and Silk in the Belgariad (who are, of course, imitations of Fafrhd & the Gray Mouser, who also make the list)
Thomas Covenant and Foamfollower and TC and Bannor the Bloodguard
Raistlin and Caramon, anyone?
That's a bunch o' old school for ya.
Tiger and Del from The Novels of Tiger and Del, seconded.
Sparhawk and Kalten (honorable mention to the rest of the Church Knights), the Elenium.
