she ______ her hands over the items
"She went to her desk, and _________ a variety of implements", where ________ is not quite running her hands over them, but not quite pointing at them either. Lingering over, maybe? Her hands are near them, deciding whether to grab the one they're over, or not. Cannot think of the right word. Help please!

"walked her fingers", "rummaged" , "touched at", "fingered"
comes immediately to mind.

'Fingered' was my first thought too. Though you say she isn't touching them. "Hesitated over" maybe?

There’s this marvelous invention called a thesaurus! Try it. You might like it.
OK. So that was nasty. But to be serious, I have a link to one on my browser which I click when my ingenuity fails me. It gave me several dozen choices just now when I entered “considered” divided into several categories.
