Can anyone identify this novel?

.... but I should mention that I have very little description to give as clues, so I realize this might not be doable.

I read this vampire novel over 20 years ago. What I remember of it is that the vampires lived and rampaged sort of like evil motorcycle gangs. The vampires seemed to be taking over LA or some other part of California maybe.

I think it was set in the western US because if I remember correctly the salt water from the pacific ocean played an important role in the conclusion of the story.

That's all I have accept for a vague memory of thinking it was an okay time filler between Stephen King novels (now I fill time between ASoIaF novels).

If you have any ideas from this really poor description please let me know.

Could it be They Thirst by Robert McCammon?

Thanks Bob! I just looked up that novel and it is indeed the one. I guess I should have made the connection because I am almost through a re-read of Swan Song and I began thinking about that other novel. I guess my the back of my mind knew it was McCammon.
