    Niven, in The Mote, uses the same method as Bujold in the Vorkosiverse and Michael McCollum in the Antares trilogy. I don't know which SF writer used it first.

    The wormhole paths are the creation of an immeasurably superior alien race, millions of years in advance of humanity, however.
    Magic is more believable if the author says it is from a million year old civilization.
