    Feb 2015 Motivational Thread

    Ah, February.

A time to reunite and rekindle one's most intimate relationships in a spasm of chocolates, roses, and most important - prose. You eat the flowers and admire the sweets, while hearing your lover's sibilant whispering for that next sentence to be written. On your knees if necessary. Be grateful this month only has twenty-eight days.

My particular task mistress requires me to whip out at least another chapter or two. What does yours demand?

    My tasks for February are as follows;

Do up a family tree for Defenders to make certain the genetics are consistent with their abilities and also with the outbreak
Edit short story contest entry and submit it
Finish two critiques (on this site)
Write every day (or at least more than nine days in a month)
    Write at least 7000 words
    Read a novel
    Earn some Karma (different site)
Redo at least one map with the corrected population spread

It'll be a lighter month for me. I've already finished both my first drafts for the Jan Feb short story entries and I was told that the one I am planning to submit is a little lopp holey in terms of the science so I have to fiddle with that some more before I submit it.

I didn't submit anything for publication last month because I didn't write anything that was stand alone but I'm gonna write and submit at least two stories this month. To make up for that lapse.

Also the usual four stories for the flash fiction monthly theme.

And a flash and short story to fit my novel worlds.

Also do more critiquing in the workshop thread.

    And that's about it really.

This is like the scene where the hero learns he's going to die, and he's got nothing left to hold him back:

    Pre-Feb 20th
    • Finish the horror story set in the New York comedy scene
    • Build the ebook it's going to go in to
    • Finish the cover for that very same book

    Post-Feb 20th
    • Something else (but total 15k for the month)

If I don't make the first three, I probably won't be able to put that book on Amazon's pre-order system without pushing back my release date, which I won't do. Being on it has made next to no difference with the first two self-publishings, but I want to maintain the process.

Okay, last month was pretty successful, sooo...

    1) Finish the latest short story.

    2) Write at least 5000 words of fiction.

    3) Write 10k words total.

    4) Start a new story.

I balked from shooting for 10k words of fiction at the last minute... on the one hand, I have more time this month to write than I did last month. But on the other, I always get held up when I finish a story doing rounds of revisions, editing, beta-responding, etc. so.... I don't want to assume I will be able to just LAUNCH into the next thing. I'll lose a week at least to planning.

    Doable?

Yes! Very much so. You will do it.

My goals are (in order of priority):

    1. Write 20k on my WIP - this is ambitious but if I hunker down in the evenings, completely doable
    2. Write two non-fiction articles for an upcoming genre-related website - these should be fairly straight forward
    3. Review a book - no problem
    4. Read three books - no problem

Concentrating more on non-fiction these days, mainly silly little articles about comic books and music, but those actually earn me a bit of scratch.

Also hoping to essentially finish a book-length philosophical treatise on the hypocrisy in politics and religion. That subject has been burning in the back of my brain for over a decade, but the world just keeps getting worse and I think I'm finally mature enough to actually write intelligently on the subject w/o resorting to name-calling (well, at least not MUCH name-calling). Hoping to have that ready for editing by the end of the month. 100K words in a month is ambitious, but I tend to binge write and the dam on this one's about to burst.

Hope to be back and more active here soon.

How is it February already? Most of January was spent being sick with this or sick with that and I didn't get my goal for that month done. But I did get a new job and having finished out my days at the old one just yesterday, I now have a week to myself before starting the next one. So I'm hoping to start feeling better from this latest bout of illness very soon so I can start taking advantage of these glorious days off.

    My goals for February are:
    1. Finish current Pirate chapter
    2. Complete draft 6 of book 1 of my Halloween series.
    3. Get Wilson the critique I promised him on his Workshop story

1 and 3 are the priorities, and I'm hoping to have both done in the next few days. 2 will have to wait until those are complete.

Oh, and thanks, Kerry, for starting us off this month!

Thanks, NE. Also, I re-read my post and realized I put 100K words. I must've been loopy. I meant 100 pages, which, double-spaced is probably doable. 100K words in a month? I don't think I would even have time to sleep.

Had a fairly successful January, now just need to keep that momentum up:

    • 15k words
    • Release Episode 1 of Ash and Flame to the wilds of Amazon
    • Finish line edits on Episode 2, prepare for early March release
    • Finish second round of edits on Episode 3
    • Continue writing first draft of Episode 4
    • Rework any plotting on Episodes 5/6 after edits

I did well with my January goals. Let's see if I can replicate that this month...

    • Finish the MG novella revisions (almost done already) and give it to my son to read
    • Begin querying agents
    • November was a big short story writing month. Now it's time to go back and start revising those drafts. I'll say get at least one fully polished and submitted plus initial edits on some of the others
    • Spire City episode 5 comes out this month, so whatever things I need to do for that
    • Write a short story, flash fiction, and microfiction for contests here
    • Write one poem
    • Continue work establishing the serial fiction review column for The Geekiary

Hmm, hopefully I can keep my sanity and manage all that...

    Plans for this month:

    1. Finish Vladimir Lenin Goes To Tau Ceti (yes, it's a working title). Probably won't, but hopefully I can at least get the first two acts done.
    2. Finish and publish another short story.
    3. Publish the print-on-demand versions of the books that I've only released as ebooks. Mostly just a matter of making the covers and uploading them.
