Also, for a shorter and more modern look at short vampire fiction, I'd recommend By Blood We Live by John Joseph Adams. Here's the TOC:

    • Under St. Peter’s — Harry Turtledove
    • Child of an Ancient City — Tad Williams
    • Lifeblood — Michael A. Burstein
    • Endless Night — Barbara Roden
    • Infestation — Garth Nix
    • Life is the Teacher — Carrie Vaughn
    • The Vechi Barbat — Nancy Kilpatrick
    • The Beautiful, The Damned — Kristine Kathryn Rusch
    • Pinecones — David Wellington
    • Do Not Hasten to Bid Me Adieu — Norman Partridge
    • Foxtrot at High Noon — Sergei Lukyanenko
    • This is Now — Michael Marshall Smith
    • Blood Gothic — Nancy Holder
    • Mama Gone — Jane Yolen
    • Abraham’s Boys — Joe Hill
    • Nunc Dimittis — Tanith Lee
    • Hunger — Gabriela Lee
    • Ode to Edvard Munch — Caitlνn R. Kiernan
    • Finders Keepers — L. A. Banks
    • After the Stone Age — Brian Stableford

I really, really enjoyed Nix's story, though I'd read it in The Starry Rift earlier in the year. I'd love to see the story taken to novel-length form or even developed into a series.

"Noble Dead" by Barb & J C Hendee certainly deserves to be mentioned. It is a really well written series, set in a medievial world, about a team of vampire hunters. They start out as travelling fraudsters touring backward villages posing as vampire hunters, but they soon discover that vampires really exist and that only they have the skills and inborn abilities to defeat them.

I really liked Salem's Lot a great deal! It was my first Stephen King book and I recommend it to anyone who likes vampire stuff.

    Others I really liked:
Fevre Dream by GRRM - I read this a LONG time ago and need to re-read it to see if it was as good as I thought 100 years ago when I read it.

    Interview with a Vampire
The Vampire Lestat - I am not a huge fan of the other Anne Rice things but I did like these quite a bit.

Brian Lumley's Necroscope Series - Can't even remember how many of those things I read! I don't remember thinking they were great by any means, but I did keep reading the next one and the next one for some reason I can't remember.
