Of John Snow!
It's been a while since I read aSoIaF, last year, but I am planning on re-reading it soon, so that I can get a better appreciation of the complexity. Some of the characters didn't stick in my memory the first time through...

Anyway, my question is this: Jon Snow. This guy ruled!
Did everyone love him, or was it just me? Was it his resemblance to Ned, or just the fact that he was a bastard!? My question is: Do you think he should have accepted becoming Lord of Winterfell? I mean, we all know it wouldn't have worked out, what with Bran and Rickon out there, and it does seem to make sense with him as Lord Commander of the Night Watch, but DAMN! I just really wanted to see him take over Winterfell, and kick some butt!
What do you all think?

Jon Snow happens to be one of my most favorite characters in fantasy, probably because he's my age and that's how I would like to be if I lived in his world.

No, I think he's right for the Night Watch. And as you said, he's doomed in Winterfell... Or at least up until this point(end of book 3) Had Martin put him in Winter fell earlier then he would have been forced to kill the Bastard Snow...
Now, as things stand, Martin COULD bring John back to the area. Ofcourse Winterfell has melted, the keep has, but he is in a position to grab the whole northern area and become a serious force... The arguement could be made that the wildings respect him, and could eventually work with him(if not follow) the Wall would do his bidding, and the people who used to follow Ned might choose to follow him, if they could see past that little fact of him being a bastard...
But as things stand I'm happy seeing him on the wall... My memory is foggy too, so I'm sorry if I've mangled some of the facts.

I was torn on that decision as well. But there is the theory that Jon Snow is not actually Ned's bastard. If this is true, and I believe that it is, then Jon has no claim whatsoever on Winterfell, and it's best that he refused. Besides, everything begins and ends at the Wall, so that's where Jon should be anyway.

"hot and jolly"
As Godmage says " everything begins and ends at the wall " , so I'm thinking that we are going to see Jon kicking alot more butt soon . Don't forget the Others , the real reason the wall is there in the first place .

Thanks for the replies!
What's this about John NOT being Ned's bastard? What is the theory... I think it HAS to be his bastard, because he looks so much like Ned! Or is he just a close relative?
And knowing Martin, even John Snow could be killed off... That would SUCK! I love how he keeps things unpredictable, but he better not kill off every character you grow to love.
By the way, is it John or Jon Snow?

This is a huge debate on who exactly Jon's parents are.
The theory I like the best is:
Lyanna was the Knight of the Smiling Tree (or whatever the exact name was) that avenged Howland Reed's honor at the Tourney of Harrenhall. When the Smiling KNight vanishes, Rhaegar goes out to find him (her). He finds her, discoveres who she is, and falls in love with her. He returns to the Tourney, claims he lost the Smiling Knight, wins the tourney, and names Lyanna queen of love and beauty. The two of them have some sort of affair, and Lyanna leaves for the Tower of Joy. Robert can't handle Lyanna's rejection, and convinces himself that Rhaegar abducted Lyanna and is forcing himself on her. Robert kills Rhaegar at the Trident. Ned goes to the Tower of Joy to reclaim his sister, but there's 3 kingsguard there. He asks why they are guarding Lyanna rather than Viserys, the new king. They refuse to answer. Ned kills them and discovers that Lyanna has just given birth to a son, her's and Rhaegars. The kingsguard were protecting Rhaegar's wife and heir. (Its probable that they were married, as Aegon the Conquerer, who Rhagar seems to style himself after, had two wives). She is about to die, and begs Ned to not tell anyone that the boy is Rhaegar's son, because he'll be killed. Ned sacrifices his own honor by claiming that the boy is his bastard son, lying to his best friend, his wife, and Jon himself for years to protect the secret. The lie eats him up inside, causing him flashbacks to the time Lyanna begged him to promise. The reason Jon looks like Ned is because Jon looks like a Stark. He got it from his mother Lyanna, not Ned.

No h in Jon's name!
cheers to Jon's with no friggin h's in their name!
**********SPOILERS SPOILERS SPOILERS************
I don't know. At first I was sure that Robert believed Rhaegar had raped Lyanna or something, but now that I figure they fell for each other it's not so hard to believe that Robert was just hurt that she'd choose Rhaegar, given how much he loved her.

Well, that was surely interesting. And it makes sense. Oh well, we'll see if it's true or not in the next book. Maybe.

Probably not, the parents of Jon Snow is a so big secret that they can not be revealed so early in the series, IMO.

after all this, the 1st casualty in the next book may well end up being Jon.

I don't like John , he is one f my least favourite characters. His character is an example for a fantasy clishe(sp?) .And the storyline about The Wall is one of the most boring in the series.I want to know who will rule the Westeros not what the Others do in the middle of nowhere.

Ah, but that's the thing!
The Others won't be "in the middle of nowhere" for long! They could penetrate all of Westeros, and then what???
