The Exorcist 1 & 2 stick out in my mind as being the most disturbing. The music gave it a frightening credibility and I've been scared of big black dogs ever since.
LOL spot the deliberate mistake . It was "The Omen" I was talking about, for some reason I was brainwashed by the powers of the Exorcist demon while writing this. Its a fact! (uh huh)
Anyway, the Omen - there's a horrendous scene where a skater falls under the ice and is grappling underneath to get out while his friends are panicking to rescue him and all the time the music rises to a crescendo. For me, this film depicts the ultimate fight between good and evil. God and Devil. I was always left thinking, the poor wee kid but he was the son of a jackal and the spawn of Satan I suppose.

Yes...I too can say that "The Omen" sticks out in my mind! When you speak of that scene, I remember it well!

The movie "It"...I have on tape! I guess it seems that every so often my daughter and I bring it out of the closet and watch it!!! It makes for a great Friday night movie!!

Lol, "It" made me laugh, it was a good movie when they were little, but as grown ups, it sucked.

"May" is sitting on my nightstand right now... haven't watched it yet, and lol, now I'm not so sure I'd like to. You see, I work at a video/communicatiosn store so I get as many free movie rentals as I like, so I often jsut grab things without reading much about them. Haha, while this will be the first that I think twice about.

And speaking of work... crap, I gotta go!!!

Actually Man Bites Dog is a Belgian film and a satire, I had to do a presentation on it and absolutely love the film found it to be cross between Cops and This is Spinal Tap.

Two films I found disturbing (for entirely different reasons):

Requiem for a dream - this film shows the most unglorified depiction of drug addiction I've ever seen in a movie. Kids should be shown this film to scare them off doing drugs.
Problem with RfaD is that it's not a story, it's a sequence. The movie starts at a low point and ends at a lower point. No arc, just downward.

While I can say it was well-acted and pretty cutting edge in the editing department, for me it was a terrible film (and not because of the subject matter.)

    Just my $.02.

One of the most disturbing films I've ever seen is Irreversible. Not for the faint of heart!

David Lynch FTW. He is probaly one of the most original filmmakers in Hollywood history, but undisputedly the most uncompromising. He doesn't pull punches and he doesn't care if you like it.

Mulholland Drive is another disturbing little number. I'm still analyizing it years later.

I think Tideland is somewhat disturbing. Amazon.co.uk synopsis:

Based on the novel by Mitch Cullin, TIDELAND follows the story of young Jeliza-Rose (Jodelle Ferland), the daughter of junkie parents Noah (Jeff Bridges), an aging rock-and-roller, and Queen Gunhilda (Jennifer Tilly), a mean-spirited chocoholic. After her mother overdoses, Jeliza-Rose and Noah move to his mother's derelict home in the middle of nowhere. As Noah gets lost on one of his 'vacations'--a euphemism for his drug trips--Jeliza-Rose becomes friends with the emotionally and physically challenged Dickens (Brendan Fletcher), despite being terrified of his sister, the witch-like Dell (Janet McTeer). Meanwhile, Jeliza-Rose slips deeper into her own fantasy world, particularly with her doll heads Mustique, Sateen Lips, Glitter Gal, and Baby Blonde--one of which falls down a dark and narrow rabbit hole--and a mysterious talking squirrel that is trying to tell her something important. Aesthetically, Gilliam's film is reminiscent of the famous Andrew Wyeth painting 'Christina's World', with its bizarre and macabre set pieces. The eclectic soundtrack features such original songs as 'Wash Me In The Blood Of Jesus' and 'Van Gogh in Hollywood' (the latter performed by Bridges as the leader of a heavy metal band). TIDELAND is a challenging film from start to finish; as disturbing as PSYCHO and as fantastical as ALICE'S ADVENTURES IN WONDERLAND.
Also Angel Heart. It's more complicated really, but its ending left me disturbed and there are some rather extreme scenes in places. It was actually an excellent, excellent movie though. It's based on a book called Falling Angel by William Hjortsberg.

Amazon.co.uk's synopsis of Angel Heart says:

In Alan Parker's ANGEL HEART, based on the novel FALLING ANGEL by William Hjortsberg, a New York City gumshoe is hired to find an aging blues singer. Harry Angel (Mickey Rourke) follows clues from the ominous ghettos of Harlem to the witchy backwoods of Louisiana, where he takes up with Epiphany Proudfoot (Lisa Bonet), the beautiful young daughter of a voodoo priestess, whom he believes will be able to shed light on the growing mystery surrounding the missing musician. As Angel closes in on the truth of the case, his contacts start turning up dead. He begins to suspect he might be next. Parker (MISSISSIPPI BURNING) threads a commentary on the limitations of modern Western society into his sensual, suspenseful thriller. As the story unfolds, Angel relies less and less on his failing, overwhelmed rational mind (and handgun) and more on Epiphany's ancient mojo. Rourke captures the unraveling protagonist perfectly, and Bonet adds an erotic and mysterious edge with her performance. Robert De Niro is both funny and malevolent as Angel's mysterious client, Louis Cyphre. Shimmering with a beguiling mist of the macabre, ANGEL HEART provides an unexpectedly haunting dose of gothic noir.
Also, the Silent Hill movie (based on the videogame series) disturbed me a great deal.

My boyfriend and I are both massive fans of the disturbing and weird, so we tend to go on a hunt for this sort of thing. I know we've watched a lot, lot more than I can think right now. I'll have to post more later when I remember.

Oh right, and David Lynch. Watched Mullholland Drive and Lost Highway. Mullholland Drive was more memorable and freaky to me.

x2! That's the one horror movie that I cannot watch alone.
For a film that creates an uneasy feeling and leaves you teared up, I elect "Apt Pupil"

Just to give you all a laugh, I'll confess that the movie Watership Down (Yes, yes, the cartoon about the rabbits!) disturbed me to no end when I was a child. It still bothers me a great deal, even now. And I'm almost 29!

I've just remembered the movie, The Tenant too. That wasn't as hugely disturbing as some of the movies mentioned already, but it was a bit so.

Also Rosemary's Baby was a bit freaky. It was reccomended to me as a disturbing movie, though it didn't disturb me that much.

Thing is, I'm not typically easily disturbed. Unless it comes to movies where people burn to death, or cute fluffy rabbits. Then I'm a total coward!

I have to confess that i found that film disturbing as well.especially the way it depicted death and brutality. quite sad. many children today would be disturbed by that film and i suspect many more will be.

hi, me and my gf love horror movies especially movies that make you (or attempt to make you) sick to your stomach, none ever really have and the likes of Hostel and Saw dont come close. But the other night i was checking out the budget movies on demand through cable, and spotted a movie called Seed, now after watching it, it was obvious that it was a terrible movie but there were a few scenes in there which made me feel .. mm well sorta like i would of prefered not to have seen it, which is very strange for me. My mate saw it and said load of crap and wasnt bothered at all by it, but it just shows that we are all just little bit different when it comes to things like horror and what "disturbs" us.

"E.T." scared me so much when I was a child. I've always had issues with alien/UFO movies and such, so I guess the fact that he was "real" in the sense that he wasn't CGI or animated, is what freaked me out. Humorous considering he was supposed to be fun and friendly.

Someone mentioned "Salo"; I personally haven't seen it but a friend of mine has and has been begging me ever since not to watch it. He does not get disturbed from anything it seems, and he wishes he had never seen it. Of course you know how that goes, someone says you shouldn't watch something, so it makes you want to even more. We'll see....

"Requiem For A Dream", in my opinion, isn't disturbing, just a good drama. I've always loved that movie.

"Cannibal Holocaust" is pretty messed up. Makes me a little nauseous.

Almost everything that Terry Gilliam does is disturbing on some level, look at Brazil. But when it comes to the most disturbing film I've seen, it has to be the Czech version of Alice in wonderland. It's seriously creepy and messed up. Heck, just look up 'Czech animation' on youtube and I dare you not to be freaked out by some of the stuff you find.
