    Zombie Fiction

I received The Zombie Survival Guide by Max Brooks as a present and loved it. So, I was wondering if there are any good horror reads out there that deal with zombies and the like.

    Any suggestions would be helpful!

    Thanks!

    Kanin,

Here's some titles for you. I haven't read them all but they've gotten overall positive write-ups for being good (and scary) examples of the genre.

The Mammoth Book of Zombies-edited by Stephen Jones OOP
Book of All Flesh & The Book of More Flesh anthologies by James Lowder
Reign of the Dead & Apocalypse End- Len Barnhart
    The Dead- Mark E. Rodgers

Thanks to your inquiry I'm going to check out a couple of these myself......haven't read about zombies in a long while, I'm about due!

    Hope this helped you some.

Brian Keene wrote an excellent book called THE RISING. It was originally done as a limited edition, but it will be done as a Leisure mass market paperback within the next couple of weeks.

I also liked Ray Garton's ZOMBIE LOVE, which is only available in a limited edition right now.

A book called: The Dead Shall Inherit the Earth
by Vince Churchill was recommended to me by someone. Has anyone read this and is it any good?

    Besides those already mentioned --

The Book of the Dead -- short stories, edited by John Skipp and Craig Spector

Dead in the West -- this is a zombie western, by Joe Lansdale

Blood Crazy by Simon Clark had zombies, and so did One Rainy Night by Richard Laymon. I think those are both Leisure paperbacks too.

I didn't care for The Rising and stopped reading after a couple of chapters, but I've heard many people praise it. It was too over the top for me.

That sounds weird, applied to a zombie novel, doesn't it? I guess they should be pretty unbelievable.

Laurell K. Hamilton has an interesting use of Zombies in her Anita Blake Vampire Hunter books. It is a modern setting where all the horror beasties are real.

Anita is an Animator - no she doesn't draw, she raises the dead. In her world zombies can be used in court and to answer questions from their family. Her specific magical power is to raise the dead, which helps her to also hunt vampires - because she is immune to their hypnotic powers. Zombies are often part of the story in each book and in at least two books are the actual focus of the story.

    The two books are

Hey thanks for the mention! Since you posted this we've added a lot of new books and included indicators for cheap (under $3) and hot (4 or 5 out of 5 stars) zombie books.

I will second Book of the Dead (first one not the 2nd one) and Dead In The West (if you can find it)..

I will also say check out The Walking Dead, sure it is a comic but it has great writting and fantastic art. A must read for every Zombie fan.

I too just finish the Survival Guide and was suprised to read that the writter of Walking Dead will not rea dit as to rip off some ideas. Fun book.

There's a hardcover version of Dead in the West coming out soon. Amazon shows the price at $16.50, which is way better than the $49.50 they're asking for the paperback.

I had two of those once and gave one away. Duh me. Shoulda kept it as an investment.

I've thought about getting The Walking Dead. The art is in Black & White, isn't it?

Yes it is Black and White but the artwork is stunning. You can get the Trade with issues 1-4 and see if you like. I love it and it does not suffer for the lack of color. Any zombie fan would be proud of what he is doing!!

I think I'll order this. I'll be back to post my opinions.

    How many trades are there?

He is only up to Issue 16, and I think it is 4 issues a trade. Well worth it.

Well, I finished The Walking Dead, and I must say, that this series is something special.

While it's not perfect, I believe it has a lot going for it.

The art is spectacular! The shades of grey are really well done. While the plot jumps around and forces us to fill in the blanks are the only downside, I really like how he is concentrating on the people and their lives instead of the horror of the zombie universe.

    I've already ordered Volume 2.
