Potential bad news? Apparently the start of filming has been delayed from the previous estimate of March 2010, to something like July 2010. No word yet on whether this will affect the proposed release dates of Dec. 2011 and Dec. 2012.

More reports that the release date of the first Hobbit film may in fact be pushed from Dec. 2011 to Dec. 2012, still three years away. And the second film, in that case, would be pushed to Dec. 2013. Very disappointing news...
I really liked the Dec. 2011 release date, as it would mark the exact 10 year anniversary since the release of The Fellowship of the Ring. The delay is not yet confirmed, but things aren't looking too good at this point...![]()
In regards to the reports/rumors of a possible delay, Peter Jackson has said that the films are still scheduled for the original Dec. 2011 / Dec. 2012 release dates, and that you "can't believe everything you read on the internet". Good news!
In other news, casting is apparently underway, including the casting of one female role. Not sure what this female role is (can't remember any women in The Hobbit) but perhaps one of the Dwarves will be given a sex-change???
So, we can't believe everything we read on t'internet...![]()
Man this is good news!! I absolutely cannot wait for this film, I just hope after all this time it isn't disappointing or just a bad movie. Think of all the uproar if that happens! lol
Maybe the female role is the leader of the Mirkwood spiders?
Huge news, and bad!
Apparently Guillermo Del Toro will no longer be directing the highly anticipated two Hobbit films. This is really upsetting news, and comes right on the heels of recent announced delays and financial problems for MGM.
After being involved with the project for nearly two years, it sounds like Del Toro's decision is largely due to the ongoing delays. Depressing.

Yeah it's quite sad. : (
Not only he was a very good choice to direct, it would also give a huge boost to Del Toro's career as a director. Then he could go adapt "At the Mountains of Madness" he always wanted but the studios don't let him. Oh well..maybe we will get "The Strain" sequel faster. ^^
Wow if Del Toro's out I don't even know how much I am looking forward to seeing it. That was my main draw for this movie. Maybe they should just drop the damn thing, it doesn't seem like they are getting it done time soon with all this screwing around.
That totally sucks. What awful news. Part of what got me so behind the Hobbit was his directing it. I had faith. Drat, drat drat.
I actually feel really bad for Del Toro. He was already a little worried about the length of time commitment when he signed up, but at least he would have ended up making one of the best films of his life.
Now, what does he get? Nearly two years of work, including moving his whole family to New Zealand (even rebuilding a second library there, of all his favourite books and movies!), spending months writing the screenplay, spending months doing pre-production and design... all for nothing! All because of stupid studio politics and financial complications. I'm sure he'll still be compensated for his efforts, but he won't get any satisfaction out of it. He basically wasted two years of his life.
Hopefully he can move on to the other projects he wants to do (like Hellboy 3, or even better, At The Mountains of Madness) and find some fulfillment there.

Bad news, I was really looking forward to seeing what he'd do![]()
Question - Any speculation on how are they going to split the movie into two parts?
Will they make Part 1 "There" and Part 2 "And back again" ?
With the latest news, I went from being incredibly excited about this project to meh. What I like about Guillermo Del Toro is that he has Peter Jackson's fertile imagination without his tendency to indulge in silly things that take one out of the story (see comic relief Gimli and X-Gamer Legolas). But with Del Toro no longer on board, what director out there is up to the task?
