Sansa?
I just wanted to hear everyone's opinions on this character. Personally, I actually like her, despite her initial spoiled brat tendencies and inability to stand up for her sister. I think she's growing up, she's fairly nice, and she basically tries to do what she thinks her family would approve of. Maybe I'm completely wrong here.
But I seem to get the impression that most people don't like Sansa, think she's a b****, and think her chapters are boring? Her chapters are actually my favorite ones.
So just wanted to see what you forumites thought about her and whether or not you look forward to her segments?

Yeah I like Sansa.
I didn't like her character much in the first book, but by the time you're reading the second I found that she was in such a crappy situation you had to feel sorry for her. Actually, I am looking forward to her chapters in the next book, being in close involvement with the biggest manipulator in the story means at least her stuff will be interesting. Her re-construction of Winterfell as a snowcastle was one of the most moving parts of the story IMO.

Sansa is not my favorite character by any means, but then again, I don't think Martin wrote her to be a very likeable figure. Her character is, however, well written (liked all of Martin's characters), so I enjoy reading about her.
*****Minor Spoilers*****
In addition, I believe Sansa has a very important role to play. She has been a whining spoiled brat (as you said) who is locked in her own little fairy tale world and doesn't understand what really goes on in the world. Slowly, as that fairy tale world has crumbled, Sansa's perception of reality has improved. In the end I think she will finally "get it", and redeem herself for all the whining by giving her life for a very important cause.
This is of course pure speculation, and given Martin's track record for doing the unexpected, I wouldn't be surprised if Sansa's story goes another direction entirely.
About the snowcastle, I agree with saintjon, it was quite moving. I also believe it marks a turning point in the development in Sansa's character.

She's definatly one of my favourite characters and I'm really looking forward to seeing what happens to her in the next book. The question is, can she survive without her direwolf?

I don't really like her at all, like I said, she's a cowardly ditz, of course she's a young teenage girl so it's understandable. She is getting a little bit of spine and cunning to her though, so it will be interesting to see how she develops.

The most inetersting thing about Sansa is the way we watch her develop. She was naive, overly trusting and spoiled, but she's learning, and the farther things go along, the more I enjoy her chapters.

I'm in the same boat. I thought that part was excellent.

I'm currently re-reading the first book, and I forgot how much Martin makes you hate her, especially in the early parts of the book... Could she be any more naive and annoying? But I guess that's the whole point to her character... She wants a fairy tale life.

yeah i loved the snowcastle part, and i think sansa's going to develop into a really cunning and really strong individual. i keep remembering all the bits of political advice she's received from cersei, from tyrion, and from littlefinger, and i think martin was using those as hints to the direction sansa's character would go. especially the one little line cersei drops about her sex being a valuable weapon-- that was great.
seems like she's also headed on the track towards being really gorgeous, at least that's how martin writes it.
quick off topic question:
who will the hottest girl be-- sansa, cersei, margaery tyrell, or daenerys (full grown of course)?

I definitely think the hottest will be Daenerys, she's just so exotic... Still too young though!

Well, Martin is definately shaping Sansa's character, but I don't particuarly care if she becomes overly cunning or if she uses her sex to her advantage. I just want to see her stop being used and stick up for something that she believes in. And to actually believe in something lasting...

You hit on exactly what I want for Sansa to be as well. The last book definitely changed her outlook on life, so I am looking forward to her character doing some good things in the next book.
That was a very cool site snake0024, thanks for the link.

I'm rereading GoT right now, and I must say, I sympathize more with Sansa now than I did the first read.
I think she's quite the regular spoiled teenage girl, she's been shielded from reality all her life and has an overly romantic and simplistic view of the world. There's no harm or evil intentions in her, other than being selfish (but who isn't?).
I'm actually pleasantly surprised at re-reading Martin. There's so little "dead time", but it still has room for proper character development, and it balances nicely between fighting action and other (talking, planning, scheming, you know) action.
Also, Martin does the whole viewpoint thing almost to perfection. I just read Erikson's Gardens of the Moon, and although I enjoyed it, it took a fair bit more consentration and flipping back and forth for me to be able to remain in control of all subplots and story twists.
Never so with Martin (and that isn't due to lack of plot twists). Somehow, he manages to provide each of his characters with so unique and distinct traits and personalities that I never get them mixed up, while still making them highly believable.
I think it will be interesting to see if Sansa eventually develops emotions for her rescuer/abductor, and if so, how that will play out. If she does grow into a smart and cunning woman, you'd think the two of them would make quite a pair.
Greetings
Artaxiad

I'm just finishing the same re-read. It's great, isn't it? I find it's a lot better the second time around, with way more stuff to take in.
However, I almost find Sansa MORE annoying this time around.
Also, the one thing that bugged me on the first read, and bugs me still, is how much Martin makes me HATE some characters. I swear, I've never felt as much HATRED as I have for Joffrey Baratheon, Cersei and Jaime Lannister, Gregor Clegane, Janos Slynt, and basically ANYONE who was involved in Lord Eddard's situation at the end of the book (...ahem, spoilers).
I feel like I have a vendetta against them, and it annoys me that I know I still have 100's of pages to read before I get that revenge (if I do at all). ARGH!!!!!!!!!!!! No author has made me feel such frustration.
AND, I will always hate some of these characters, regardless of whether I read their POV. I still hate Jaime, after Storm of Swords, and will still hate Cersei after A Feast For Crows.
DEATH TO THE LANNISTERS!
