I love horror but I've never read lovecraft before. Can anyone recommend a good place to start?

The collections published by Penguin Classics might be a good place to start. The Call of Cthulhu and Other Weird Stories, The Thing on the Doorstep... and...I always forget what the third book is called. Dreams of the Witching Hour, I think.... They're affordable and have corrected texts edited by ST Joshi, the leading Lovecraft scholar, and the books are pure Lovecraft, with no other authors butting into the collection.

Hi all

I've read a number of Lovecraft's works and thoroughly enjoyed them.

Of the Mythos stories, the only ones I recall particularly well are The Hounds of Tindalos by Frank Belknap Long and The Horror In The Museum by Hazel Heald.

At The Mountains Of Madness

Dagon And Other Macabre Tales

The Haunter Of The Dark And Other Tales Of Horror

The Dreams In The Witch-House

Ive read the Necronomicon...it has no author in the book...but it's supposed to be by Lovecraft. Regardless, its an excellent read, and i highly recommend it. But i have "The Dream-Quest of the Unknown Kadath" here, though i've never read it yet. Any opinions?

of his 106 known works (26 were collaborations) I have to say the most fantastic and beautful piece of prose form mr lovecraft is "The Dream-Quest of the Unknown Kadath" featuring Randolf Carter, the only protaginist in his works who does not sucumb to unknown lurking evils.

Indeed the story is more along the genres of sci fi and fantasy then horror and contains a fantastic ending which plunge us straight into the myriad of philosophical conundrums that still facinate us today. I highly recomend this work to anyone interested in these kinds of things.

Ive only read a few of his works so far, but this one is undoubtably the best. Start reading it rira, it's well worth it!
