It hasn't been dubbed into English yet so it's really hard to follow the plot cause your eye is constantly being drawn away from the subtitles by the gorgeous visuals, and the characters talk so fast! But mostly they just prattle on about boring philosophic questions, until another eye-popping action scene comes along. I had to watch it twice to figure out what was going on but it all looks really really good,....did I mention art?
I went to see it in the movie theatre - - and concur with your observations. I did buy the DVD though.

Gundam Seed anyone? Somewhat preachy and perhaps not that original but otherwise very good all around.

There was a movie Crying Freeman that I've seen that was made by the director of Brotherhood of the Wolf and starred Mark Dacascos as well. Pretty good.
