Hi Severn. You've just got to do it! Sit down and let it come. If it's in you to write then you have to do it. It's kind of soul-food.
Consumption is over-rated.

Let me know what the Mary Gentle book is like. As I said, I loved the Golden Witchbreed. Just skip the last 50 pages unless you want to be depressed for a year. It kind of renders the entire story utterly pointless. It seemed like a cop-out that was trying to be a clever unexpected conclusion. Lets say it was a bit TOO conclusive.

Heh. I just remembered they played a game in the book. I can't remember what it was called, but I made a set and actually played it quite a few times with friends. It was a good game! Something to do with a hexagonal board covered in triangles...

Good luck with the writing.

Take care,

Liam.

Now, you see, one of things that happens at SFFworld is that everytime someone mentions 'ASH A Secret History', I notice.

And it gives me chance to rave about how good I thought the book/books are. (If you really want to take a look, try putting 'Mary Gentle' through a search and see what you get). If only I was on commission!

Keeping it brief, I have said before that after reading 'the stuff' for thirty-odd years it is one of my favourite, favourite books. I quite envy anyone who hasn't read it yet.

Rant over!

[Later edit: Severn, the Orthanc book you are talking about is an omnibus edition of what Liam is talking about. It includes Golden Witchbreed, Ancient Light and a short story all together.). Not as good as Ash by any means, (in fact downright depressing - Mary wanted to make sure there was no room for sequels!) which is why I was so surprised with Ash when I read it - so much better than I was expecting! Liam, the White Crow omnibus might be more your thing.]

Another author who seems very interesting; I already own Duncton Wood and "Wolves of Time" but haven't checked out either. Both Stonor Eagles and Skallagrigg are books that have been very well-received and from the face of it, the premises seem very good.
