Joan Aiken
I last night ordered an armload of books by Joan Aiken. If you're not familiar with her, she was Conrad Aiken's daughter, and a prolific writer, producing fantasy, supernatural, children's YA, and adult tales, both novels and short stories. Her best work, many feel, is her short-story output. Even (or perhaps especially) her "children's books" are, like so many so labelled, eminently readable by adults.
For the curious, there is available an excellent bibliography of Joan Aiken's works, nicely organized by type of book (and sortable); the site it's on is itself a nice Aiken site.

I also picked up Glen Hirshberg's The Two Sams (story collection) in trade pb for a friend. If there's a Book Warehouse near you and you like intelligent, thoughtful ghost/horror stories (not gory, but intense stories of unease) then you should check for the Hirshberg collection.
|
I have that one as well, very nice. Just bought American Morons, plus Inferono, the new horror anthology which has Hirshberg's prize winning novellette " The Janus Tree", plus The best horror of the year vol.1 which has new story " Esmeralda".
Also just bought:
The Blood Knight-Keyes ( hopefully some good Green Man action)
Giant Bones- Peter Beagle ( this man is an awesome writer and I want all his shorter work).

The local library is having a sale this week, so of course I had to hit it up. Today is one of the last days and everything that's already cheap is not marked down 60%. Yay!
Legends (with New Spring, The Hedge Knight, and some others by a bunch of unknown authors )
The Book of Lost Swords - Saberhagen - this one has the first three books of the series
The Summer Tree (book 1 in The Fionavar Tapestry) - Kay
The Chronicles of Thomas Covenant the Unbeliever - Donaldson
Lord Foul's Bane
The Illearth War
The Power that Preserves
Needless to say, I was pretty excited to find these and all for just $3.60.

Nice value grab, Seak. In the opposite direction, I had to spend a lot (for me - i.e. $28) for an author I've been looking for. It's not the author that's rare, but the omnibus and that of Lloyd Alexander's Prydain Chronicles.

Man, your in-laws must think you're the bomb. I'm wiping tears away just thinking about how much love goes into a gift like that.

American Morons is on the TBR, as is his novel, The Snowman's Children.

I hope to revisit Giant Bones in the new year. All of the stories are connected to his novel, The Innkeeper's Song, so I read 3 of them several years ago but only read the novel this year; those stories were same world, but not directly connected to the events in the novel. Now I want to read them all. The last one, "The Tragical Historie of the Jiril's Players" was one of my favorite short fantasies in the '90s.
