Who are you? Why Fantasy/Scifi? - Page 19

Sci-fi, or more so really Space Operas. While I like some of the older classics (Heinlein especially) I get bored with the hardcore science fiction that deals with actual science. I love reading however about space warfare, but not military SF because reading about strategy and technology bores me. More of the swashbuckling hero type against all odds sort of stuff.
I attribute it to an addiction to Star Wars until I was about twelve.

Hey all, nice to meet you. I'm Hannah, 22, and right now seeing double after reading the last 18 pages. I'm a fairly idle student, though my finals are looming so that may have to change, Final Fantasy, beer and Cardiff's quiz machines permitting.
Fantasy and SF because they seem to have both the most brilliant and most terrible books and films of any genre and you never know what you'll get next

I haven't read anything like enough books to say much on here, but I'm working on it.

Hey, I'm Claire, 15 years old and I live in South Africa. I've been around on SFFWorld for 2 months or so but I might as well introduce myself properly! Sometimes it's easier for me to just read than focus on life, that's why I love fantasy so much because it lets me escape. The first fantasy series I read was the Aurian Series by Maggie Furey ( I can't remember if they had a series name)

Hi everyone, I'm Jennifer. I'm 33, single, and since I am working a consulting assignment right now I live in North Carolina during the week and return to South Carolina on the weekends. So home is wherever I'm at!

How did I get into F&SF? Seven years old, front row seats with my brother and a bunch of friends when we went to see Star Wars. I've been hooked ever since. My parents also love fantasy/science fiction, so I grew up reading their books and going with my family to see most fantasy/science fiction movies that have been released in the U.S. over the past 25 years. I love both fantasy and science fiction.

Justin, 28 from Jersey (Island between England and France). I am separated, have two kids (Son 4, Daughter 1).

I write and record music, read and write fiction and work because eating is good, not to mention having a roof over my head.

The Hobbit was read to me as a child, and I chose to read Druss the Legend. Haven't looked back since. I must admit though, I love movies more than books lately.

15 years ago movies did not have the ability to match your imagination, now with movies like LOTR and Minority Report, Matrix et al, I'm not so sure. Think I may start a new poll thread on this.

Hi everyone.

I'm Aimee, 15. I live in the Lake District, England.

My first fantasy books were the Narnia Chronicles which I read when I was about 6/7.

I'm a big LOTR fan (though I only discovered it when the film came out) and have since read the Hobbit and LOTR numerous times and I am reading the Sil at the moment.

Reading a science fiction book is on my 'to-do' list.

My name is Brianna, I'm 14 and live in Ireland.

I'm not sure what pulled me to fantasy. It intrigues me. It's more interesting and captivating than romance stories or adventure stories. It's the sort of genre that can hold every other genre in it with a twist.

I think my first fantasy book was the Wind Singer by William Nicholson. I really enjoyed it, and I still read it sometimes to remind myself what got me addicted to fantasy.

I don't read sci - fi that much. I really should... I remember reading Exodus and Children of the Dust. Not sure if they're sci - fi though. Don't know what genre they'd fit into...

Hi! I'm Angela and I'm 26 years old. I've been married for 5 years and I've got a lovely daughter who is also 5. My hubby and I have been together since we were 16/17 so it seems like we've been married for almost 10 years instead of 5 years.

I recently got into fantasy books two years ago. I was in Walden's bookstore (and on vacation) just looking around when I wondered into the fantasy/sci-fi section. I ended up buying The Eternal Hawk by David Gemmell because of the cover. After that I went out and bought most of the books by David Gemmell. Now, here I am researching on other fantasy authors and books to fill my craving.

Why fantasy?? Because I don't think my mind is capable of dealing with all that crap that is in romance novels. If I wanted that, I'll just watch the news. I've never read one and I don't intend to ever read one. Fantasy on the other hand, lets me escape from the real world. I just need to open up a book and I'll be sent to another world where I get to experience a very detailed action movie.

Mike, 19, born in Scotland, lived in England for 8 years and am currently in living in France. Don't ask.

Ken Macleod's Engines of Light trilogoy was my first experience of the sci-fi genre, though I think at the time a lot of it went over my head (was 12 when I started on Cosmonaut Keep, the first book). Since then I've read sci-fi and fantasy stuff on and off, and still do. Although these days I find myself on the net more than in books, and I don't think I'm alone in that regard... right?

Same here!!

Coincidentally enough I came across my old copy yesterday after wondering where it had got to. Have yet to read it for the second time though - something that might happen shortly as I don't have much reading choice where I am at the moment.

My name is Bryce. I'm from California I'm 24, just got married a few weeks ago and it's great. I'm studying Economics and hope to graduate soon.

I'm new here and my first fantasy was The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe. That was in elementary, but I took a break for a while until I read the Hobbit in middle school and then LoTR after that.

That's when I got sucked into fantasy and loved every minute of it.

Since then, my favorite's have been George, Feist, Moorecock, Marco, and lots more. It's always nice to have lots of good stuff to read.

Hi everyone,

I'm new here. My name is Robert, I'm 32 and I work at a computer video game company in Southern California.

I got into sci-fi first with Fahrenheit-451 and Rendezvous with Rama when I was around 10, and later into fantasy with Sword of Shannara and the Hobbit in my early teens.

Right now I'm switching back to sci-fi after a long bout of reading non-fiction and although I still read fantasy, I'm almost completely exclusive to 1 book a year (whichever one Terry Brooks puts out). I'd like to read more fantasy but I'm really picky for some reason.

Anyhow, I'm here to lurk in the shadows and see what recommendations everyone has for new reading material

Hi folks, I've been lurking on and off here for a couple of years now and thought I should finally post and introduce myself. I'm currently living in Victoria, Australia. I have two young children and have been married for coming up 6 years now. I have been a fan of fantasy for about 12 years now and have been slowly building up my book collection.

I am a big fan of Australian authors, I particularly love Ian Irvine, Jennifer Fallon, Trudi Canavan and so many more.

Raymond E. Fiest originally sold me on fantasy with magician and I have continued to love his books.

Anyway, hope to participate in some threads very soon

Seeing as though this thread is now raised from the dead twice, I might as well contribute.

I'm Mik (or Michael, not really bothered anymore), 19 from England. I suppose my job title would be something like stockroom assistant. Basically, what I do is I unpack boxes sent up to the store from the warehouse, and I prepare (i.e. remove all the protective packaging) the stock to go out onto the shelves so customers can buy it. It's only a temp position, so I need to start looking for another place of employ soon.

I have a strong Fantasy bias, although I do have a love for sci-fi. I'm currently reading Mass Effect: Revelation, and playing the odd game here and there (oddly, I'm playing GTA). Legend of the Seeker finished a few weeks ago, so I've not got anything to watch on TV anymore. Suppose my favourite fantasy series is... Um... Wow, I guess it'd be the Dark Tower and everything related, whereas my favourite Sci-Fi one is definitely the Mass Effect universe.

I have a habit of picking up book series in the wrong order (e.g. I got Dark Tower 1, 5 and 6 before 2, 3, 4 and eventually 6, and I have Absolution Gap but none of the others), and sometimes watching films in the wrong order. And playing games in the wrong order. Yeah, I'm not very organised :P

That's me in a slightly cracked nutshell.
