Philip Jose Farmer has died

Another of the giants has left us. I read To Your Scattered Bodies Go and some of the Riverworld sequels, and loved them. He was well-known and well-appreciated when he was more prolific, but maybe not so much now.

He also helped start the whole Wold Newton Universe, which may be his most remembered achievement.

To Your Scattered Bodies Go is a great book (and a cool title). Here's hoping that he wakes along the river somewhere.

I have not yet read anything by him, but it is sad to think we have lost another great writer. I will add To Your Scattered Bodies Go to my must-read list, because the title intrigues me.

If you do, you may wish to tab the following Riverworld books as well:

2. The Fabulous Riverboat
3. The Dark Design
4. The Magic Labyrinth

I remember reading the series quite a while back. I liked the first book best, but that's certainly not where the story ends.

The idea is as simple as it is ambitious: along the banks of a river, everyone is resurrected. Napoleon, Julius Caeser, Hitler, your grandmother.... Everyone.

(You may wish to know that this is sf, rather than fantasy, by the way. Also, there was a fifth volume, Gods of the Riverworld, but I recall it wasn't really part of the same storyline. More like a sequel of sorts.)

Always sad when someone passes on I loved the idea of the riverworld series but had to give up on the last novel. It just seemed to lack something that the earlier novels had and it couldn't keep me interested.
