I discovered Yarbro's wonderful vampire Comte Saint-Germaine this summer, and have read just about every one of her books, except for the brand new hardcover, Midnight Harvest, which I have yet to get.

I love the historical detail in her novels. Sainte-Germaine moves through several millenia, and she has books set in all sorts of times and places. I haven't come across many folks who have even heard of her books, and that's a shame because they are excellent reads, especially for someone who appreciates history.

Sainte-Germaine is what I would call a "kindler, gentler" vampire.
There is a certain amount of erotic content - of course there is, they're about vampires, right? - but it is unusually tasteful and very romantic.

Anyone else a Yarbro fan?

I've only read one of the St. Germain books, years ago, and I liked it, but there have been so many of them, and I've been reluctant to invest time and money in keeping up.

I went to the World Horror Con in Kansas City last April. CQY was a featured guest, and she appears to be a remarkable woman. She's like your high school French teacher -- very calm, knowledgeable, self-assured but without being haughty. I just loved her.

And she really knows her vampires.

I have learned so many fascinating things from her novels about historical eras I thought I knew pretty well already.
One thing about her style.....every chapter begins with a piece of correspondence between characters, or about characters. My only negative comment about her books is that this can get a bit tiresome, especially after reading a dozen or so books!

Myabe one of these days I'll get the miraculous good fortune to attend something like the convention you mention, dear. There was a pretty big one in New orleans, three hours south of me, this past summer, but my husband would never let me go to anything like that.

They can be very expensive. The one in KC was close to me (I'm in central Iowa) but they're still pricey, what with the hotel, food, and the dealers room.

It was fun though, and I'm going to try to attend whatever gets within range.

My first husband would have had a fit, but he's gone now, and my second is more amenable. It comes with age, I think.
