No, guys not OUR names and addresses. Summer is travel time. And if you travel to another city, how could you not visit a used booksotre??

I think it would be a neat thread if members could give name of favorite bookstore in their city/area. Then, if you find yourself between flights in such and such a city or whatever, you would know what used booksotres there are.

I'll start us off. I live in Omaha, Nebraska. Should you be there (say during the College World Series) here are ImHO the three best bookstores:

1) Pageturners Used Books--has the best science fiction and fantasy section and the staff is very helpful and knowledgable.

2)Backshelf Books--Newer, smaller; very well organized; and again a friendly and knowledgable staff.

3)Jackson Street Booksellers--Probably the best known; the largest of the three and a larger general selection--but not as much science fiction as you would expect.

Haslam's Books in St. petersburg, Florida (the biggest bookstore in Florida)

There are a few that I have gone to.

John King Books in downtown Detroit. It's an old warehouse, and a great place to look for just about any used book, not just sci-fi/fantasy. The area is pretty good (since it's well patrolled, being a block down from one of the casinos). It's off the Lodge Freeway (M-10) and Lafayette.

Then there is Between Books in Claymont, DE (between Philly and Wilmington, DE), on Philadelphia Pike. Half the store is sci-fi/fantasy, and it's a pretty good size store.

That's probably the best reason (or only reason?) I've ever heard of to go to Delaware!

The Charing Cross Road, London.

Many MANY bookshops, including Murder One, which specialises in sf/f/h and stocks a lot of imported US stuff that isn't published over here, as well as all the old favorites.

The Book rack in Universal City is a great used book store in the San Antonio area. Inside the city of San Antonio Half-Price books is pretty good to pick up used books but beware they do not have an exchange/credit policy.

Well, if anyone ever travels to Bangalore in sunny southern India I know all the best second hand stores in town.

Here are a few:

Select book House: Off Brigade Road (go down the road from the MG Road intersection and take the 2nd lane on your left). One of the oldest in town, a very broad selection, not much genre fiction though.Middling prices - some bargaining possible on larger purchases, but the quiet dignity of the elderly gent in charge may make you feel a bit too ashamed to do so.

Blossom House of Used Books: Church Street, opposite Amoeba (these are landmarks that most people in the area will know, dont worry) Opened just two years back, it has more of the pulp fare than Select, which means more sf and fantasy! The classifications tend to go a bit awry, so dont be afraid to wander into any shelf. Prices are cheaper than Select. Bargaining is possible, but usually yields only incremental gains.

Classic Book House (Although the sign still says Cyber Parlour): Shrungar Complex, MG Road (Shrungar Complex is right next to India Coffee House - step into the complex and follow the central circular block clockwise until you reach the shop) Another brand new place, the owner just took a step up from being a road side hawker! He has a great range too, and cheaper prices than the other two. Again, bargaining is possible, especially on larger purchases. He has been getting some great sf/f fare lately and hopefully the trend will continue.

If you ever find yourself in Long Beach, California or local environs, look for Acres of Books, one of the best used bookstores I've ever seen.

Just North of intersection of Long Beach Blvd. and Broadway, easy walking distance in downtown. Hours 10am-9pm Monday-Sat, 10am-5pm Sunday (I think).
I was just in there over the weekend and I couldn't believe the size. It was like stepping into the Tardis or something. It really felt like it was bigger on the inside than the outside. The organization and alphabetization leaves a little bit to be desired, but when you're browsing and trip across something really cool, it makes it really worthwhile.
