Online Writing Competitions?

Do you know of any websites where you can post some of your books and see if you can win for writing the best one?

I wanted to see if I could grasp a good number of readers into my story.

Middle School no longer does Young Writers and I was hoping that they would be the ones to start me by getting me another reward.

Red Writing Hood is now defunct. I had placed in their last contest which made me feel really good but the anthology to follow was never published.

I also was told that I placed in the Jerry Jazz Muscian (though there's no prize for second place). That competition gets few entries (I was told they only had 75 entries last time) but the competition is brutally tough.

Great list Abby, I'll have to check out a few other of these competitions. If I recall in Stephen King's 'On Writing' winning a contest is a great feather in your cap when submitting to agents and publishers.

Thanks for the info on those two contests. I figure that most contests are worth entering--I plan to enter CONduit this year--but I avoid the ones that charge entry fees, and the ones that look very small. I'm not sure any editor would care if I won some random one-time contest hosted by a fanzine in western Mississippi.

I've heard that entry fees can make contests not worthwhile, because the the odds of winning are subject to the judge's opinions anyway. But it seems that the opposite is true with screenwriting. Nearly every screenwriting contest charges a hefty entry fee, including the major ones.
