A flash of white skin pulled tight over a small skull and large black eyes met my stare as I slowed my old Ford pick up on the lonely, moonless back road. I floored the gas pedal in a pure panic when I recognized it, but the truck backfired through the carburetor loudly and coughed out a threat of it's own of do that again and I'll die on you. Before the headlights flickered out and the engine died completely, I noticed something large and metalic in the yellowing headlights. Big as Grandma's chicken house, but smooth in shape and round like a silo, it was sitting in the late summer soybean field just yards away from me. My hand clutched my old Granddaddy's pistol in my lap. My fingers formed tight around the wooden pistol grip. "You ain't gettin' me, boy," I said in a snarled tone cocking the trigger while bringing the long-barreled pistol up dead level with it's scrawny chest ten feet away. I pulled the hammer back quickly and began to squeeze the trigger. The alien face moved closer as if it floated on the warm night's air. Almost immediately, I entered a dream state dropping the pistol on the rusty floorboard with a loud thud. I never heard the pistol's loud report as the hammer met the primer.
