While it is not really science fiction I found 'The Years of Rice and Salt' to be enjoyable, a fast read and not overdone with technical speak, almost
I like it because you're not starting with plot, but an idea. And I think that's the best sort of story, where you explore ideas.

Haven't reread it though. But it'd be an interesting exercise knowing what I do now about the storytelling process.
I think it's one of those movies that would have turned out better if it was given more space. Three hours instead of two.
