I remember my father coming in the house with this movie he had rented in his hand. After looking at it, I thought it would bore me straight into the ground. Upon viewing it though, I found this movie to be one of the best and most original movies I had ever watched. Now I don't know who Richard Kelly is, but he definitely put his heart and effort into this cinematic work of delicate and yet strong work of art. I had actually wanted to watch the movie again right after I had just watched it. I was mesmerized from beginning to end and if this movie has any small cult following, then I'm definitely in it. I was quite surprised how a director could blend some humorous lines into a movie that is so dark in nature. I mean he did it without ruining the movie at all in even the slightest amount!! Believe it or not, if the humorous lines weren't even in it, the movie would have had a great loss of impact. The humor helps you remember that the horrific events foretold of are not actually going to happen. Also, the music was very well done in this movie and fit the mood of each scene with incredible success. I highly recommend this movie to anyone who is tired of watching the same old poorly written movies. This movie is great at night too!! And this is all coming from a 14 year old.

Before I watched this film, I had heard many mixed thoughts on it. Some told me it was a pile of crap (stating it was about a giant bunny and the end of the world), which of course made me reluctant to watch it, and some said it was a masterpiece. After seeing it myself, I agreed with the latter.

The film is hard to describe, as it has sci-fi as well as comical aspects to it. Some view Donnie as a super hero, whilst others see him as... well... something else. I do warn you, it is a very complex, and deep film, that requires a few watches (I recommend the Director's Cut, as it has a running commentary with the Producer, Richard Kelly, and a friend of his, Kevin Smith). Some parts of the film make you cry with laughter, and other parts (mainly the end) make you straight-out cry.

The story revolves around a boy called Donnie Darko, who begins to have visions of a man-size bunny (quite creepy), who warns him that the end of the world is near. The story goes, and Donnie keeps having these visions. After a while, time-travel is mentioned, and the film really kicks off (not to say it wasn't interesting before that point). So much happens in a few hours, it's incredible, and as well as time-travel, concepts of tangent universes are brought into play.

Like the title suggests, this film is the story of Donnie Darko. I honestly think everyone should own it, or if that fails, at least rent it. I guess if I could compare it to anything, it would be the Butterfly Affect (another of my favourite films).

Donnie Darko is most certainly a landmark in sci-fi history. One which I could talk about for hours upon hours, but would end up giving away some of the plot in the process, so I won't. It's also a film which can be perceived in many different ways (me and my friend still debate some of the concepts).

If this review hasn't helped you, then go watch it and decide for yourself. If, on the other hand, this review has helped you, the GO WATCH IT extra fast! Well, that's about all from me. Enjoy!

PS - if you don't cry at the end, I pitty you!
