Games - Sony PSP to battle Nintendo DS (2005-01-10)
So it begins again. What started with the console battle of Playstation vs N64 and continued with Playstation2 vs Gamecube, has moved into the one realm of superiority that Nintendo has always enjoyed, the hand-held.
Gameboy has been arguably the single biggest success story in Nintendo’s history. A consistent seller, the platform has played host to all of Nintendo’s brilliantly innovative franchises, from Mario to Super Metroid.
Nintendo’s new hand-held, the unique, dual screen DS with its backward compatibility to the GBA had seemingly furthered the productive Nintendo legacy of the mini-console. Until, that is, Sony decided to release their own hand-held, the PSP.
In a move similar to Sega’s Game Gear, the PSP attempts to dazzle with a bigger, more detailed screen, more technological gadgetry than you can shake a stick at (MP3, ATRC, movies and bluetooth technology for starters), major franchise games such as GTA and Metal Gear Solid and the sheer power that Sony’s brand name has achieved. The PSP, supposedly due for a March release in Europe according to Amazon -

and already available in Japan and due shortly in America., could well be a very strong contender to the Nintendo crown. With a DS launch date or value yet to be seen in Europe, it could be that Sony has got the early jump on Nintendo. Time will tell.
