Wow, I have only read the first bookin this trilogy, but in reading your review for book 3 I'm floored. I can't think of another trilogy where the main character is killed and the side-kick promoted to main character. Is this just an accident, where the author has written the side-kick too well and can't sell the intended main character? Or was this planned from the beginning?

I'm pretty sure it was planned. Book 2 also makes a sidekick (a different one than book 3) into the MC, and in book 2 Our Hero from book 1 is already in lots of political trouble and mostly out of the main story line. So it's a natural progression.
