Last Movie You Watched 2026

Tonight I made the mistake of watching Lee Cronin’s The Mummy on HBOMAX. This movie has little in common with previous Mummy films, in fact it is actually more like The Exorcist with an Egyptian backstory. You do get the backstory eventually in pedantic detail, but the point of this movie is really to present the viewer with a body horror gore fest. It is gross and absolutely disgusting and there really isn’t any redeeming value I could find in it. Cannot recommend unless you like pointless splatter.
Prairie_Dog , I'm an old horror fan and found it very tough to watch .

Supergirl. It has its issues, but I enjoyed this much more than Disclosure Day. Think Milly Alcock is wonderful, although I'm not sure the new direction for DC entirely works. It is very much Guardians of the Galaxy meets Superman/Supergirl in tone. The clever thing is basing it mainly off Earth, which takes the focus off Supergirl whilst it finds its feet. Jason Mamoa plays the part Jason Mamoa always seems to play these days (Dune excepted.)

Usual moans - I hate the 'kiddie in peril' trope, although the actress is good; and
nearly killing a dog is not a favourite for me
But worth watching.

Saw Spiderman: Brand New Day on Saturday, which is still doing very well at the cinema. Was as good as I had hoped. Really think Zendaya and Tom Holland have developed so much in their acting. Saw in 2D, although I could see where the 3D bits would be.

Also saw a Dune 3 and a Doomsday trailer on the cinema. Both looked great, but if I had to choose just one to watch, it would be Dune 3, no contest.

And tonight I watched X Files - I Want to Believe, a Directors Extended Cut, but not the one out on Disney at the end of the week. Thought I'd watch the original before the new cut.

18 years on, it's still a bit of a mess, but nice to see Dana & Scully together again.

I watched Project Hail Mary. Overall I found it heavy on hollywood-goofiness with too many musical interludes, and the continual double-act style dialogue between Rocky and Grace didn't work for me. It had some interesting qualities, like the book, and the zero-gravity scenes were extremely impressive but special effects can't repair a film.

On a side note: it was interesting that Sandra Hüller's character unexpectedly sang a song to show her 'cool' side - she does a very similar thing in Tony Erdmann, one of my all time favourite films.

Creature with the Atom Brain (1955)
Typical 50's Black and White B movie.

Solid. Zombies with a science-fictional twist and a touch of the Godfather. Written by Curt Siodmak (Donovan's Brain).

Love the Kim Newman introductions to these editions, which put them in perspective.

I also enjoyed The Spidey movie . I'd heard complaints it was too long , I didn't notice , it fairly zipped by . It had an underlying " feelgood " tone which we all need today .
And agreed Hobbit re Tom and Zendaya , an off screen relationship certainly paying dividends professionally .

jurassic-world-4.jpg

Today, I watched Jurassic World Rebirth on HBOMAX. This is the latest episode in the long running series, and has to struggle to make sense. First, we are introduced to a world where dinosaurs have run wild, but aren’t very successful. They seem to only thrive in a narrow area near the equator, especially on islands. This is explained as the conditions there are more like those they evolved in. These areas are off limits, although it appears that no one really enforces this.

Our premise is that an evil pharmaceutical company needs to get a blood sample from a living representative of the largest seagoing, terrestrial, and flying prehistoric species to make a miracle drug that will make them more rich. They recruit a lady mercenary, a paleontologist, and a crew of outlaws to go to an island where these species can be found. However, this was also an island where a genetics company was making even more scary hybrids. Essentially dino monsters. None of these things are new to the franchise.

However, in Jurassic Park films, we don’t really come for the plot or the logic, we come for the dinosaurs. These deliver both in many action sequences and heartwarming scenes. This movie also delivers in callbacks to the earlier films. From small details to remakes of earlier sequences, it gives the devotee plenty of Easter eggs to enjoy. Is it a good film? Not really, it’s formulaic and derivative. Is it watchable if you can get past these issues? Very much so…
