Looking for this series

Hello,

Once upon a time a few years back i saw a book / series on Amazon but i do not remember it's name or much of it.
The story was about a boy living in a sort of sanctuary / orphanage with other kids, supervised by some adults. It was somewhat in a different world but a bit dark and gritty and religious. Long story short by the end of the book the boy found out he has powers, really really powerful and escapes the orphanage.

Well there is the bestselling YA series Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children, (movie coming out soon,) but the protagonist doesn't escape the orphanage -- he helps those within it.

Then there's the novel Obernewtyn, which fits better, but the protagonist of that is a girl.

Basically, can you remember anything else about it? There are an awful lot of books about teenagers and kids going to orphanages.

It vaguely sounds like Bloodsong by Anthony Ryan, but the plot you described vaguely sounds like a lot of books.
