Luke Brown

As part of our SFFWorld.com’s Member Spotlight Series, Nila interviews Luke Brown, avid fantasy reader and reviewer.

lukeHello Luke, thank you for taking time from your busy schedule to chat with me. I promise I’ll make this…deathless.

Luke: Thanks, Nila! I was sorry to hear that SFFWorld is too dead for some people. I certainly prefer my SFF discussion forums not, well, too dead, more on the alive side of the spectrum. Anyway, I’m here to help. Hit me with the questions. *concentrating face*

SFFWorld: What’s your SFFWorld.com’s forum alias and why did you pick it?

Luke: Luke_B. Mark Lawrence was already taken.

SFFWorld: How did you discover SFFWorld.com and why did you decide to join?

Luke: I joined SFFWorld when I was an opinionated and privileged white male twenty-something who wanted to shout at other people on the Internet about how everybody else was wrong and my taste in books was superior.

SFFWorld: How long have you been a member and what keeps you coming back?

Luke: I have been a member for over ten years. I keep coming back because Mark Yon stole my pet hamster and threatens it with violence if I don’t keep producing official reviews for the site.

SFFWorld: What’s your favorite book (genre or not)?

2662169Luke: No. I refuse to pick just one. That’s just a trick to make my head explode. Let’s go with five recent favs off the top of my head. Tender Morsels by Margo Lanangan, Magic For Beginners by Kelly Link, Light by M. John Harrison, Who Fears Death by Nnedi Okorafor, Zoo City by Lauren Beukes.

SFFWorld: What’s your favorite author (genre or not)?

Luke: Can’t pick between Ursula Le Guin and Gene Wolfe. I hope they marry and have children one day.

SFFWorld: What’s your favorite genre (science fiction, fantasy, horror, steampunk, etc)?

Luke: Books about detectives who are really one-eyed canaries on old age pensions hooked up to a virtual reality machines.

SFFWorld: Where’s your favorite place to read?

Luke: At work when my manager’s back is turned. The danger makes it more exciting.

SFFWorld: Favorite con (convention)?

Luke: Lawrence Jamieson from Dirty Rotten Scoundrels. Oh, convention! I would have to say Conflux.

SFFWorld: What do you do when you are not reading or messing around on SFFWorld.com?

Luke: I never messed on SFFWorld! That’s a very rude way to describe my official reviews! Oh, sorry, I see what you mean. I have a four year old daughter named Amelia and a two year old son named Thom (yes, with an ‘h’ – just like Thom Yorke). They keep me pretty busy in real life. I also like to keep fit and enjoy watching movies with my wife.

SFFWorld: Thanks for taking the time to talk to me, Luke, and catch ya around the forum.

Luke: My pleasure Nila. But as soon as I get that hamster back from Yon, I’m outta here.
