Top 5 Female SF & Fantasy Authors

Julian,

Sorry about that. I should have known better. :p I knew there were a few other Garner fans around but for some reason I never registered you as one. :|

By the way, it was you who liked that obscure author/book Joe Rummage? I have been searching high and low for that one and haven't been able to find it anywhere. :(

Yep, I'm the Rummage guy! (It's Jog, not Joe, by the way...)

You may wish to try this:

http://www.abebooks.co.uk/servlet/S...hame+wright&y=13&tn=jog+rummage&x=49&sortby=3 (UK site) or
http://www.abebooks.com/servlet/SearchResults?sts=t&an=grahame+wright&y=13&tn=jog+rummage&x=45 (US site)

Abebooks is a good source for trying to track down out of print books, I understand. Haven't ordered from any of the participating sellers myself, but I seem to recall an earlier thread with generally positive comments.

I (...) well remember Jog Rummage!

Now that is a bit of surpise! Glad to hear someone else has read this, Tony!

Having said this, we are getting a bit off topic, I fear, so I guess we'd best leave it at that, for now...

My top five, *not* in order:

Ursula Le Guin
Anne McAffery
Andre Norton
Connie Willis ("Doomsday Book" Rocks!)

...and my Wife! :D

.

Andre Norton

That reminds me of the day I discovered she was female... still have not read her, but everyone I know that reads fantasy told me it was a guy.

Anyways, my top five in no particular order would have to be:
Anne Bishop
Elizabeth Haydon
Patricia Kennealy Morrison
Ursula K. Le Guin
Patricia Briggs

Five is hard! haha, that is more like "some of my top five" favourites, because there are more than 5.

1) Traci Harding
2) Kylie Chan
3) Anne Bishop
4) Fiona McIntosh
5) Anne McCaffrey

1 and 2 are in close competion being my two fav authors. If you havn't read their books its worth it. All these are fantasy and I found all of them funny in one way or another.

This is a somewhat motley crew, and reflects more who I enjoy reading than some carefully considered survey of the SF and Fantasy market.

In no particular order:-

Lois McMaster Bujold
Ursula K. Le Guin
Julian May
Charlaine Harris
Robin Hobb

Harris is probably the oddest choice, but I really find the Sookie Stackhouse novels a breath of fresh air. I read them sandwiched between bouts of John Ringo and David Drake.

Just wanted to say this has been my favorite (and most costly) thread in my short time here...I just got back from my local bookseller over $100 poorer!

My purchasing theme was "...female writers I have not read that were suggested on SFF."

I hope we have stay-indoors-no-chores-bad-weather this weekend!

Damn-

Forgot to mention C.L Moore. Her Northwest Smith stories are like little SF versions of Conan ... Albeit the hero is closer to a prototypical Han Solo than a mighty-thewed barbarian.

Read 'Shambleau' tonight. Hard to believe that it was her first short story.

Catherine Asaro - the hardest SF romance ever
Sarah Zettel - Fool's War
Janet Morris - Cruiser Dreams/Dream Dancer
Nancy Kress - Beggars series

An oldie - James Triptree, Jr. Up the walls of the world.

Katherine Kerr is barely mentioned. I have Darkspell but just realized that it is second in a series. Should I run out and get the first (Daggerspell).

Kerr of course!

Daggerspell is great and it reads like a standalone too, which is a great thing in book one of a series.:)

Lessee...

1. Robin Hobb
2. Melanie Rawn
3. Janny Wurts
4. Kristen Britain
5. Holly Lisle

But I've yet to read a lot of stuff, such as JV Jones new series (her first trilogy was mediocre), Paula Volsky, Kate Elliot, Jennifer Roberson, Jacqueline Carey, Carol Berg, Lois McMaster Bujold...

Hello. First post here, don't hurt me!

*hides*

My top 3 writing girls are:

1: Anne Bishop(Black Jewels Trilogy <3)
2. Anne McCaffrey(Dragonriders of Pern, haven't read the other books by her)
3. Laurell K. Hamilton(The first books of Anita Blake are awesome, the last ones are not. But hey, still worth a mention)

For the time being, that's all from me.

Flac.

1. Lois McMaster Bujold - Miles, high fantasy, and romantic fantasy that I fully enjoyed - one of my top 3 authors

2. Mary Gentle - some masterpieces of the genre from Orthe to Ash to 1610 to Ilario - a top 10 author for me that I buy on publication

3-5 Chris Moriarty - only 2 books but I really, really liked them

3-5 Steph Swainston - same comment; barely wait the 3rd book due in April

3-5 Sarah Monette - same comment; 3rd book due in the summer

Of course there are many more female sf&f authors that I've read and enjoyed some of their work, but this 5 above are in my top ten list of authors and I really look forward to their new books and buy them on publication.
