Things I Have Noticed

Ergo, all beauty is flawed. By extension, all ugliness is flawed. Yielding all perception to be flawed. All understanding is therefore flawed. All knowledge follows suit. And ,therefore, since I never seem to get anything straight, I am as normal as the next person. Woo hoo!
 
Yes, HE, yes you are. Or you would be if there weren't some beauty in the ugliness... and a little clarity in the perception... and a little bit of comprehension in the understanding... and an iota of truth in the knowledge... and a little bit of wackiness in you. ;)
 
Ah, little lamb, ramming ewe'r wisdom down my throat in a vain attempt to instill an anti-wacky antedote. Such courage and compassion is not oft discovered amongst the jet-propelled set. Mayhap, were I still in my hoglit days, your well-wishing efforts might prove more fruit-of-the-lamb-full but, nay, I have sped too far past that period, am well into my dotage and therefore an untrainable Shepherd. It is an age of youthful inspirations, mature speculations, and wether-ed conclusions. Stil, one manages to tap the keyboard in seemingly intelligent bursts.
 
I like Alon's stuff a lot. Did you check out that one he calls "Fight," Kevin? Reminds me of some of yours, but also maybe some interesting ideas for your fight stuff. Like the Departure very much.

And we are so happy to have Sheepie return to the fold. :)
 
Blame Mr Ridyard. I came to save SFFworld from his plagiarising ways. Tada tadaaa! Then I saw all my favourite people in here, waiting for artwork for Kevin so I thought I'd pull up a chair and watch the show too.

And I posted a little of what I've been up to this year in the post your progress thread.

It's been too long. Nice to see you're all still keeping busy and out of mischief.

Yes, Alon's fight is also excellent. What really sells that particular piece, of course, is the liquid that is flying everywhere from the swords and things smashing through the containers, which is something I can't replicate. I can do action bits like the men fighting, but without the liquid and table bits flying around, for example, it tends to look a bit static, like someone's just floating there rather than leaping towards the other guy. Maybe at some point I'll get enough skill to add those smashed bits in postwork.

I too am very happy to see Sheepie back, and quite pleased that she decided to pull up a chair in my little ol' thread. Congrats on your new works! It's good to see you're keeping yourself all neat and tidy in print. As for us keeping out of mischief here, hah! You've been away too long if you have notions like that... :D
 
Oh really? Well pass the pop corn and lets get on with the show! Maybe you can teach me a few things. Me being such a naive quiet little sheepie.
 
Today I decided to go looking for your latest. I know it's on Amazon, have seen it there but I am a fiscally conservative person - cheap - when it comes to buying books so I always go searching places like Alibris. Here's what I found:

I think it's pretty cool that they have the first two. Wonder how long it will take the newest to reach the used book sellers? Or will most people be like me and never let go your books?:rolleyes:

The "used" versions often show up almost immediately, but that's because there are some (perhaps not very scrupulous) sellers who simply take a data feed of all books, slap an automatic "discount" on it, and assume they'll be able to scarf up used copies somewhere to sell. However, the Alibris ones certainly are legit, as they are coming from Powell's in Portland (interestingly, when I was last there a few months ago, they didn't have any of mine on the shelf, although they used to. Either they got in some new (used) stock, or they plan to actually find them somewhere too. :D )

And you are to be commended for your diligence in hanging on to your copies. Collectible, don't you know! :rolleyes:
 
I have signed copies. Child number two loves them too, tho... so they got a little battered. :D

I always knew you had a soft spot in your heart... Who would have thunk that you'd provide a home for battered books?

On another note... (hummmmmmm)...

An author friend of mine commissioned me to do a book cover for her, but with a twist. It's for a short story that she's releasing as a Kindle-only version. She's heard varying stories about this, from people making basically some extra cash out of such a deal to getting zip from it. But she thought she'd give it a try. I will be most interested to see how it goes.

Anyway, she gave me the basic parameters for what she wanted, I came up with a draft concept and we went back and forth as I refined it, until coming up with this. Part of the deal here is that the full color version probably will never be seen as is. The two ways people are going to see it is as small Amazon color thumbnail, and in black and white on the Kindle itself. Thus my design had to be at least legible at thumbnail size while also looking good full sized in grayscale.

I have no idea what the resolution of a Kindle screen is, so won't know how this actually looks until she finishes getting it set up with Amazon. But the Kindle grayscale version will be really for *after* the story's been purchased; the only selling job (inasmuch as a cover does so) will all be from the thumbnail.

And on a related note (fahhhhhhhh....)

From one of the few blogs I read regularly PubRants, an agent in Denver:

"What I wanted to highlight tonight was that I’m reading a ton of statements from different houses, different authors, and different genres.

I’m noticing one big change. The amount of eBooks being sold in any given accounting period has risen dramatically.

I’ve been watching this for years. Four years ago, any author that sold more than 50 books in the electronic form (in one accounting period) was blowing it away and mostly I’d only see high numbers from our SF&F authors.

Now I’m looking at titles selling 500 to 1000 copies (and certainly sometimes more) in electronic form regardless of the genre. Even this time last year the numbers were not running nearly this high."
 
Oooh, cool. But she's still not talking about self-published authors. But cool. Perhaps they will be able to publish more authors if the cost of publication goes down.

lol, I like that video! Oh so true... However, it was not like that in this case, fortunately. This was actually a paid commission from Kara. I don't know how much she's planning to charge for the Kindle story. That will be another interesting thing to take note of, once it's out.

Now I naively thought that when the production costs of the book and the distribution costs of the book went down with Ebooks then the pie would be divided more fairly between Author - Publisher - Retailer... but apparently the poor old author is again losing out.
