When I was in middle school (I am 22 now) I read a book or series of books about people who could build things out of color or light or something using a form of instrument. The things you built were solid, like the main character used it to make stairs. Thats really all I remember.

I would appreciate it if you could help me find the name of the book.

Perhaps either Spellsinger et al. by Alan Dean Foster, or the Soprano Sorceress et. al. by L. E. Modesitt Jr.?

Thanks, but not it :(

Perhaps either Spellsinger et al. by Alan Dean Foster, or the Soprano Sorceress et. al. by L. E. Modesitt Jr.?

Thanks for trying, but neither of those is it.

Lets see, the main character is still in school, so not an adult. He isn't transported to this world, the place where playing an instrument builds solid objects out of light, that is his home, where he is from. He does leave home at some point, but not his world. I vaguely remember something about gems or crystals or something.

How I picture the instrument thing in my head anyway is kinda like the "holophone" or whatever it was called on Futurama when Fry played it and it made pictures above it. Kinda like that, but the things that appeared stayed semi temporarily (they do fade I believe).

Any more help would be greatly appreciated.

That is certainly it! I remember reading the first book when I was younger. He uses a crystal and makes a staircase out of his pit prison. Also I believe he uses one to make a giant fist.
