Boots reveal location to evil character?

Feeling nostalgic and recommending books from my youth to my son. In the 1980's I read a book where the character was traveling across a landscape and discovered that his boots, due to how they were made, revealed his location to the evil character/force in the book.

I realize I may be mis-remembering parts of this, but I'm pretty confident in the few details above. I realize it sounds derivative of the ring, when worn, in LOTR or The Hobbit...

Around the same time, I was reading Heinlein books, but I don't think it was one of his books. Thanks for any ideas. I've been trying to remember for a few years!

I think it was one of the Thomas Covenant books by Stephen R. Donaldson, probably from the First Chronicles.

As soon as I saw the name, I was sure this is it! I had just remembered something about "bane" in the title, but kept pulling up Broon's Bane... A Rush song, which coincidentally happened to be something else I was into at the time!
