SFFWorld Members big Blog thread

Good Post Jo. (p.s. there seems to be a problem with the url/last link in the piece.)
Thanks, Kenny - that link is playing me up from time to time for some reason. I've changed to the Amazon US link, although I think it still needs to be highlighted. I'll have to mail Amazon about it....

Well the link text/value itself seems to be fine, but it's just not 'clickable' -- my first guess is that it has something to do with it being the last thing on the page. Maybe try putting a few words or sentence after it and see what happens. Worth a shot.

Thanks, Kenny, tried that and no good. Sad, too, since the blog had a serious number of hits!

Thank you for that link, Janne: I enjoyed the look through the website - i enjoy a good (or even a bad!) old movie, and there's lots there I didn't know about. I enjoyed reading about El Supersabio as I've never seen Cantinflas in anything other than Around the World in 80 Days! Good work: keep it up.
Thanks for taking the time, I'm glad you liked it!

C. J. Cherryh's Forty Thousand in Gehenna is about colonizing a planet and raising families. Her Chanur books are about a ship crewed by members of an extended family (not human, but the family dynamics are often similar). I think families may come up a lot in some of her series I am not so familiar with. They are there a lot in her Fantasy, so I assume it is much the same in her SF.

Hugh Howey's Molly Fyde series is all about family. It is young adult, though. Still, good stuff about what folks will do for family and friends (good and bad).

Thank you both, I'll go off and explore (Cherryh has been on my tbr pile for a long time, I have no excuse except lack of time.) :)

I had a rant about what the market wants and why you should just write your own darn book:

http://jozebwrites.blogspot.co.uk/2015/12/writing-rules.html

Good, I haven't read it yet, but I agree completely. Write your own book/work, don't try to write to the market or editors' tastes.
...
Now I've read it....most importantly....to me:

"....The readers don’t care about the number of books out this year, or whether a story conflicts with another. They just want a darn good story...."

Truth!

I think it might be a sign of maturity. I mean, I listen to my editors and my betas and I work with them. But I also try to stay true to what I want to do.

I think it is important to write in such a way that you will reach your readers, but not to chase the market (or them)!
