So how are y'all preparing for the Apocalypse?

Also also, I don't want another Cold War just because the political elite can't own up to their own lies and deceit. Call me crazy, but yeah.

Ohhhhhh, can we have another Cold War? Pretty please? It jumped our technology forward by huge leaps, not to mention the wonderful things it did for our space program. We could use a couple more of those. Just so long as they don't turn into Hot Wars. Luke-Warm wars would be okay, I suppose. We could arm both sides with spray paint and try to deface each other's countries with giant phallic symbols in each nation's colors. That might even give our current youth an outlet for their artistic expression when we draft them!

In Korea and Vietnam there were more bombings than in Germany during WW2. Today in Ukraine there were more tanks destroyed and buildings lost than in Iraq and Afghanistan combined. Don't fool yourself. Cold War is as bad as the World War. But it's more convenient for people from 1-st world counties. Because it's a colonial war and only minor and underdeveloped countries will suffer. Who care if another 3-5 million dies in Africa, Eastern Europe and Asia? If this number would equal 5 million of English, French or American citizens - we would have a Memorial in media. But nobody cares about lives outside 'golden billion'.

This is the truth. The essence of our time.
Nazis are not death. They are in power. As long as death of 1 EU28 or USA citizen is a tragedy and 100 Africans deaths are just part of the news reel - Hitler is smiling somewhere.

Trump just found the right people to pander to in a way no previous politician could get away with - because they were politicians, not reality TV stars. Maybe Miley Cyrus can run against him in 4 years promising something even more unlikely than universal free tuition. Maybe she could offer Canadian citizenship to all Americans.

We're preparing for the apocalypse by stocking up on frozen chicken and DVDs.

Exactly. I've been saying this since the summer of 2015. He sees America not as a society of citizens but as an economy of consumers. Whether that's a brilliant insight on his part or a congenital inability to take a wider view makes no difference. By applying to the realm of politics the same brand-building techniques he's always used to strengthen his celebrity brand, he came at the US political process from a completely new angle. And caught everyone flat-footed.

The thing Americans, as well as the rest of us, have to come to terms with is that he probably has zero interest in actually governing. He'll leave that to his hirelings and appointees. Trump will just go on working his brand, tweeting and holding rallies, without paying much attention to any consequences other than the effects on his brand.

Of course, in the real world of competing societies and ideologies, his brand will become an irresistible target. A truck bomb at a Trump tower or a gunman at a Trump country club will drastically change the brand's dynamics. And Trump will react with all the powers of an American president and without a second thought.

That's when it will get tricky.

Hopefully his election and presidency will serve as a cautionary tale without doing too much damage in the process.

You're a lot more optimistic than I am. But all we can do, literally, is wait and see.
Optimistic? Did you catch my Miley Cyrus post? Of course I'm worried Trump will destabilize the entire world, destroy civil rights, sink the economy and make rich celebrities the even more incompetent replacement for politicians. But I can certainly hope that Trump will just get bored and the populace will realize its folly.

If I was being really optimistic I'd suggest that Trump, after bamboozling his way into office, will turn back into a Democrat and lead a charge in reforming Congress. But as a person who grew up in the now defunct space age, I'm not very optimistic about much of anything I can't touch with my hands.

The boredom part is quite probable. But even if he quits, he'll leave in place the most reactionary administration since Herbert Hoover. And my observation of American politics over the past fifty-some years tells me that the American populace needs at least a generation, and usually more, to realize it's follies. There are still plenty of folks around who think that weapons of mass destruction were found in Iraq.
