THEME: Those Who Lie Beyond the Fence
(with thanks to @Addison Smith who gave me the prompt last month. I didn't use it then but have been meaning to)
The theme is just meant to be something you can bounce ideas off. I don't care if there's actually a fence in your story (maybe its a metaphorical fence, right?)

WORD COUNT LIMIT: 1001-5000
DEADLINE: Your local midnight on 26 February 2018

2017 saw a decline in the number of participants in our contests, so let's make a new year's effort to all get writing and contributing again?

If you are new to the contests, here's a general outline of what to do:

1) Think of a story idea that includes speculative fiction elements (fantasy, science fiction, horror elements) and fits the theme stated above
2) Write story
3) Edit story
4) Post story in the Stories sub-forum. (Use these guidelines to title your thread so it is easy for folks to find your entry.)
5) Come back here and let us know that you posted your story and provide a link to that story (makes it easier for me to find your story when it comes time to vote).
6) Read the other entries and offer comments that help the writer both know what they did right and what they did wrong (in your humble opinion)
7) Vote when the voting poll goes up

The winner takes over the next contest and has the honor of picking its theme.

CONTEST GUIDELINES:
  • PG-13 - generally, the forum restricts its contents to what would be acceptable at the PG-13 rating. However, we are lenient for creative purposes in the writing forum. Please warn readers if your story contains adult situations.
  • Once you post your contest entry, we discourage writers from altering the original text submitted. While it may be okay to change a few typos here and there, please do not revise your piece substantially. If you would like to respond to feedback, you are encouraged to post your revision within the thread (but not the original post).
  • Please refrain from voting for your own story.

^ This.
Interesting theme!

Kenny would qualify as not smart, but genius ... and a very stable genius at that! He'll meet your deadline. ;)
I'm thinking of the Biggliest liar beyond the fence....or wall...or tiny fingers on red bon bons or lies so far beyond the fence they become lgbt squirrels with rainbow tails.

It's a brand new year and in an effort to draw attention to our first short story contest of 2017 I'm tagging everyone who participated in the short story contests of 2017. In order of participation levels they are;
@R.J. and @mistri taking the lead with 3 entries each
@SteveW @Hereford Eye @Facing tied for second with 2 entries each
@ColdSun @locofife @JonLaidlow @Victor Espinosa @VictorK with one each

There are 6 contests a year. Hopefully 2018 is the year we can all increase our participation.
January 2018 Micro Fiction Contest
Will link to the January 2018 Flash Contest once it's posted
Will link to the Jan-June 2018 Novella/Novelette Contest once it's posted

I think we should one step further and tag anyone since the contests started. I think this forum is on its last legs. We need a hail marry.

Are you going to sort through the voting the threads or are you asking me to do that? I don't mind, I just don't want to bother if you're already on it.

I was more or less just musing to see if anyone had any objections or other plans, though I am happy to help. I had been thinking about sending out a few PM's top people who use to participate in the workshop and monthly threads.

I was thinking of posting links in the monthly and write one submit one threads on a regular basis bedded inside my updates.
