Just finished Russian Doll - it's certainly speculative, don't quite know which genre it fits otherwise though! I loved Dark on Netflixs -best Sci fi I've seen in years.

Started watching this - really liking it! The lead actress plays her character very well.

I watched Nightflyers and found it to be a superbly creepy sci-fi horror. Too often sci-fi horror is too horror (Event Horizon) or too sci-fi (Aliens). This really was both.

Re: season 8 GoT anyone else think its funny they got it down to 6 episodes and yet Martin is agonizing over his 1000s of pages for the last book (or two, I am unclear where this stands). Its a *lot* easier and quicker when you don't sweat the details and are willing to waive a few hands...

I’ve heard a lot of negative reviews of the series, which was cancelled after the first season. It is interesting to hear a differing view...

Yeah, I don't get it. I heard them, too, but I wanted to see it for myself.

It's a very odd series, and in places slow-moving, but I have read the reviews and it seems like most of them were expecting a typical space-opera and are mad that it's something else.

Episode 2: 60 minutes of sentimentality.

One that missed me by until recently: Strange Angel, which is the fictionalised account of Jack Parsons, the man who took the credit for what became the Jet Propulsion Laboratory.

I knew a lot of his strange past before the series - its about occultism and sex cults as much as the development of rocketry and science fiction. He's connected to L Ron Hubbard and other science fiction writers of the 1940's & 50's, which is how I knew - he's mentioned in a few sf histories and I've read at least one fictional account of his life.

The series is well done but not exactly sticking to the factual details I suspect. But I have found it surprisingly entertaining. Season 2 will appear in June, I understand

I really liked this show for the first few seasons! Very stylized! But it just kept swerving and morphing and a coherent plot seemed to get further and further away...

Game of Thrones season 8 so far.

Not a shock. Without a 1000 pages of GRRM goodness they are all, WTF do we do? The whole Bran plot point seems a little plucked out of left field...really think GRRM would have something better. (I do love the actor that plays Bran's delivery, but the acting has almost always been great.) And while we know GRRM was definitely going to involve the Iron Born, using them as transport for the Golden Company is also unlikely to be what GRRM has in mind. Given the size of Westeros, wth good is 20,000 men in King's Landing going to do? Now if they were sailing to the North to try to squash them between opposing forces, 20k wouldn't be enough, but at least that would be a logical tactical concept. But the thing that *really* bugs me is that they casually decided not to defend the wall. Despite the supposed "conversations" between GRRM and writers, guessing this season has *very* little to do with what GRRM is actually writing.

But hey, we got sex between someone that looks 12 and someone that looks 22, so there is that, if your into that sort of thing. (I'm aware she is actually 18, but she very much still looks like a child.)

Cosmonauts: How Russia Won the Space Race. BBC documentary from 2014, rebroadcast on BBC 4 HD yesterday.
When Neil Armstrong stepped onto the moon in 1969, America went down in popular history as the winner of the space race. However, the real pioneers of space exploration were the Soviet cosmonauts.

This remarkable feature-length documentary combines rare and unseen archive footage with interviews with the surviving cosmonauts to tell the fascinating and at times terrifying story of how the Russians led us into the space age. A particular highlight is Alexei Leonov, the man who performed the first spacewalk, explaining how he found himself trapped outside his spacecraft 500 miles above the Earth. Scary stuff

Seen that one, Av. It's amazing how such events are mentioned so matter-of-fact-ly. The thought of cosmonauts dying in space is a sobering one. Reading through stuff at the time, there were rumours, but hearing it said is quite chilling.

I finished Season 2 of The Tick, which pretty much delivers what one would expect. Maybe the plot is a little more tacked on, and being familiar the whole thing is less likely to tickle you, but I still found it charming and entertaining . . . in a low key kind of way. I don't imagine it will be too many folks favorite show, if it ever was, but I enjoyed it to a reasonable degree.

Thing I'm mildly annoyed about (being a glass is half empty dude): after teasing the tick's origin in S1, this issue is totally forgotten. Though this may well have been the best decision, they *did* tease it in S1, and it made me curious.

Just seen the latest Twilight Zone episode, The Wunderkind. If the President of the USA can act like a child, then I guess that this episode is appropriate. Elements of "It's A Good Life" but brought up to date.

And strangely appropriate, not just in the USA. Not sure whether to laugh or cry....

To be fair, it wasn't the most complex story line ever seen, and it wouldn't really work, of course. But it was interesting to see where things were going.... if also wincing at the same time.

To me it was underwhelming and overrated. Lots of posturing without meaningful resolution. Lots of things built up to something that in the end meant nothing. (Can you tell I'm avoiding spoilers?) It was good - but the best episode of a programme ever, as some are claiming? I also rather suspect that we're a long way away from what will be the GRRM version, if we ever see it.
