Just finished Season 1 of Slow Horses on AppleTV+ and I liked it more than I expected.

Finished Masters of the Air, which was good, but not as good as Band of Brothers or Pacific, I'm afraid.

I liked "Masters of the Air", very much. My one quibble is that it would have been so much better had they used Harry Crosby's memoir, "A Wing and a Prayer", as a major source. His book if far more rooted in the reality of what the 100th went through. That is to say Donald J Miller's book, "Masters of the Air," is not good, it comes at the air war from a different point of view, that of the main daylight bombing campaign. Dealing with the politics, senior officers and the various different sections of the bombing campaign. Harry Crosby's book, has a lot of humour, which counterbalances the horror. It also details how, later commanders, Bennett and Jeffery, of the 100th, after Buck and Bucky got shot down, turned the 100th from a very Gung Hoh, unit suffering terrible losses, into a very proficient one. That's not to say they didn't continue to have losses, all the 8th Air force did. In fact the Army Airforce lost more than any other branch of the US military in WII

Hi Sue!
My issue with the series was that the feel of Masters of the Air was different. It has been a while since I've seen them, admittedly, but Band of Brothers and The Pacific, especially Band of Brothers, felt less dramatized than this did. Too much of it - the dialogue, the way it was shown on screen, the actions, felt that it was more for dramatic effect rather than just 'telling the tale'. This just felt less subtle than the previous series.

Now, I suspect if I go back and watch those series again, I'm sure I will find evidence of dramatization, cliched characters and dodgy dialogue onscreen - but I was surprised at how much more to me Masters of the Air felt like a drama than previous. Was it because we were focused on a smaller group of people this time around? Possibly.

I'm not saying I didn't enjoy it - I did, a lot - but it just felt more contrived than the previous two series. And that surprised me.

I finished The Gentlemen on Netflix. I thought it was excellent. It was a little uneven at times, but was thoroughly entertained. Highly recommended.

Currently watching:

Three-Body (2023) . The Chinese live action version of this story.
It's quite good. I will probably also watch the Netflix version, but perhaps not for a while.

 

[Hobbit]

Saw this pop up over the weekend Atramentous. I was impressed that there are 30 episodes - suspect it covers all three books, and may be closer to the original source material?

But subtitled, which I don't mind, but can be a dealbreaker for some in the Hobbit household - they don't mind some, but if the whole programme has them, they spend more time reading the subtitles than watching.

Nevertheless, on my list!

I finished watching 3 Body Problem over the weekend. I really liked it. I haven't read the books, but I think I should now. I hope they continue the story.

Watched a couple of episodes last night. I like it quite a bit. The story is a quirky tongue in cheek offering. And the "Lord Titus" bear fight cracked me up. And that musical track, lol. The Strontium 90 song at the end was cute.

I’ve been watching a dark and often gory series called Salem on Hulu. This disturbing show imagines what it was actually like in Salem at the time of the witch hunts if there were actually powerful evil witches. It’s just as dark as that premise would lead you to believe, but it’s not just the witches that are disturbing. You also have to take into account the Puritans, the misogyny, the racism, and the difficulties of living at that time.

Season One set the stage and introduced all the characters, and told some stories in Salem itself. Season Two is branching out into other places like Boston, where there is a rival witch who must be dealt with. It’s all very different from most series, as it has a historical horror story going on…

Started watching "Loot" on Apple, good for a laugh.

Only seen 3 so far. Fell asleep watching the 4th one...need to re-watch it. I like it. But I've always liked Walter Goggins (The Ghoul) anyway.

I finished Fallout. I enjoyed it. The last few episodes were pretty good, but I never did get to the point of loving it. I'm looking forward to Season 2, tho. BTW, I never played the game if that makes a difference.
