Hey all! First post here.
If you're looking for a new character-driven fantasy story that still has plenty of action and doesn't feel "slow," you may enjoy Born of Broken Chains, which just launched yesterday!
The story follows Soren Valamir, a former slave fighter who has spent six years fighting other slaves for the entertainment of the Belgaran Empire. When a devastating sacrifice buys him a chance at escape, he discovers that freedom brings him no peace. Haunted by those he left behind, Soren vows to return as the warrior who will break their chains.
It's an upper-YA / crossover novel. It has the adventure, identity search, and coming-of-age arcs expected from classic YA, but also explores the lasting effects of trauma and slavery, and the darker side of war and fighting evil. I wanted all fans of epic fantasy to enjoy this. At its heart, Born of Broken Chains is a story about freedom, redemption, survivor's guilt, and the cost of battling evil.
The world of Engarinar is one where magic, history, and myth are interwoven, and where magic only appears in the world every few centuries for a brief period.
A little about me: I'm a school psychologist working with adolescents in a New York City high school. I'm also a lifelong fantasy fan with a background in fencing, martial arts, and an interest in historical weapons, which has shaped the action and combat elements of the series.
