It sounds crazy, but I read the back cover of the book but when I returned to get it, It was gone. I believe it was a DAWN publication. Most likely 60's to 80's Can any body help me....

I suspect you mean DAW Books, not Dawn Publications? :)

DAW Books. Founded in 1971 by veteran paperback editor Donald A. Wollheim, along with his wife, Elsie B. Wollheim, DAW Books was the first publishing company ever devoted exclusively to science fiction and fantasy. Now more than 30 years and more than a thousand titles later, DAW has a well-deserved reputation for discovering and publishing the hottest talents in the industry.

Dawn Publications is dedicated to inspiring in children a deeper understanding and appreciation for all life on Earth. We aim to help parents and teachers encourage children to bond with the Earth in a relationship of love, respect, and intelligent cooperation, through the books we publish and the educational materials we offer online.

Oops, Of course I meant DAW books. That is what happens when it's late and I type too fast. Thanks for pointing out the error.

I know what you meant, look where we are, after all. As you said, it was late, and I was amused when I checked Dawn Pubs. :)

That said, let me try to helpful, although I don't have an ID for you. If the book was a short story collection, I'm not going to helpful. If a novel from DAW, it should be findable relatively easily. Note that back cover blurbs sometimes lie or miss the point of the book.

It sounds like a satirical story in the tradition of Pohl & Kornbluth. That eliminates a lot of books and authors. My first thought would be something by Ron Goulart, as that's his style. DAW published a lot by him, novels and single-author story collections, most I have not read.

Some other authors who are known for writing some lighthearted fiction I would eliminate, as I've read most of their works, such as Chandler, Biggle, and Laumer, although I've been known to be wrong (cough, cough).

If you recall the front cover, or may recognize it, you can browse the DAW covers through ISFDB, year by year.
